those things on the side of radiators that you turn to manage the temperature... i'm missing the plastic covers that you can turn. all i have is the square things that you need to turn with a pliers or something.

are these generally a standard fit that i can just buy replacement plastic things for?

i hope i'm explaining myself right.

Normally one side of the radiator hase a round top that turns the spindle, you can use to close the radiator valve.
You can use it to adjust the amount of water passing through the radiator but it does not maintain or regulate room temperature.
Therfore you only need one adjustable top for each radiator valve. You can buy these from most decent DIY Stores/ wholesalers.

The other side just has a cap . This is a "lockshield ". This is normally set when you are balancing the radiators/ heating system.

    For info:
If you want to regulate the temperature in the room ( for more efficient heating) you need a thermostatic radiator valve. (TRV's).
This will involve draining system and replacing one valve on the radiator.
Sometimes you may need to change the fitting on the radiator or modify pipes slightly.
