NCT - Probable failure

    Hey,

Wife's car has NCT tomorrow (Volvo S40). A couple of weeks ago warning appeared on dash "Anti Skid Service Required". No bother we thought, service was due (done Thursday), NCT is on Saturday.

Turns out a part is required and we were told today it won't be in until next week.

My question is should we bother chancing the NCT as the warning is up on the dash (can't be removed say the garage) and will be the first thing the tester sees when he puts the key into the ignition? If we cancel, the fee is €22 but a failure will result in paying for the test again.

FWIW, the car is driving perfectly and certainly to me it feels no different to before the warning came up.

    As ever, all replies appreciated.

I'd imagine if you fail on the light only it'll be a visual retest and therefore FOC?

I would advise you to go ahead with the test anyway as a retest costs 27eur so there is not much difference between that and the cancellation fee. Also, in my experience, you are likely to fail the initial test because it means more money for the company running the NCT.

Visual retest only for warning lights so its FOC if thats all it fails on. do the test

Thats just bad luck or you not taking enough notice of your car there is no quota to fail cars.

95+% of cars i send for testing pass first time, the ones that fail i know what they are gonna fail on before the test.

This is the case, if you were to remove the bulb you'd fail anyway because they check that it illuminates before the engine starts.

It's a free retest anyway for a visual, best go through with it...

Go through with the Test.I had a similar problem with the ABS light on mine.It needed a sensor, which we couldn't get before the test.
The car failed on ABS light and having a SAT Nav mounted on the Screen.
Got sensor fitted, removed Sat Nav, and called back for a visual check at a different NCT centre(no need to make appointment) passed no problem.:D

By way of an update, the car passed. Warning message not even mentioned.

    :)

It looks like though message "Anti Skid Service Required" warning in your car, refers to Traction control system (help to keep the grip while accelerating). Not to ESP, which keeps stability on the bends.
As only the second one (ESP) is a reason for fail NCT.

    Dragging this up from the past;

Can anyone confirm an ESP warning light is a fail at the NCT? ABS I understand as a safety feature, but ESP can be manually switched off in most instances.

I have a vested interested - need to NCT a Renault soon and it has an ESP warning light on :)

    Thanks, Richard

How about an import Honda Fit/Jazz with an airbag warning light - but which doesn't HAVE an airbag (cause the original owner replaced the steering wheel with a "cool" sports one).

Pulling the fuse doesn't seem to work either so I'm guessing there's a sensor somewhere that needs removing/sorting.

My car went through the NCT lastnight, passed even thought the 'brake pad wear' light was on!

esp light is a fail , visual only though. airbag light will fail even tho there's no airbag , you need to get rid of the light. its ok to have airbag removed. doesnt matter about brake pad light once the pads themselves are ok.

You can't get "rid" of the light, because the NCTS will look for the light to come on initially and then go off again.

Yeah, pity they now have a book with how long an airbag light should stay on for. It never goes off with an oil light, you could put a timer on it if you're that bothered!

if there's no air bag fitted (or removed) to the car, then the air bag light doesnt need to come on at all. fact.

Any warning light on the dashboard is a fail, had to get the ABS module on my S40 done a year ago as the OP's error came up. Did a look around at the time, ABS warning light is a clear failure.

In saying that my S40 went for its first NCT and failed today. Leaking brake fluid, thought it was general pad wear a while back and just topped up. They found the rear barke nipple leaking, stuck on a nice fancy fail sticker on my 4 year old Volvo, not nice, OTT in my opinion. Took off the rear and found a somewhat loose brake nipple, easily sorted, now for retest.
Still on original pads so not a garage fault. Strange. At least the NCT picked it up, a standard service and check before NCT probably never would have.
