folks, been a long time pc user I am considering treating myself this weekend and going for an imac 27" or maybe the macbook pro, but dunno which one to go for..im kinda leaning towards the i5 imac with the 27" screen..

how does the imac compare? can i play games on it, etc, and is there a good range of apps?

    cheers.

Whether you buy the laptop or desktop the questions you need to answer are :
    • What games do you currently run or want to run?
    • Similarly for applications
    • Is portability / mobility important?
    • Would an iMac + iPad / iPhone / MacBook combination better meet your needs?
I get the impression you might not have made a list of your must haves vs. your nice to haves to assist you in your decision-making.

well i am currently a windows pc user, win7, have 2 high end laptops, and a netbook, and a high end HP desktop too, all running win 7.

i dont really have many requirements, except for wifi, which the mac has.

used a friends mac, and liked it, so thought id get one for myself, i suppose i would go with the desktop mac , and i have 3 laptops already.

If you've already got that many laptops then go for the desktop, you'll get more for your money..

    If I may ask..

Going to buy one of these tomorrow..Am I mad to go with the 21.5" i3 @ 3.06Ghz..? I don't do any PC gaming right now (have an xbox 360 for that). Currently on a Win 7 Dell XPS lappy with decent specs.

The 27" screen looked like overkill to me, I will be using my iMac for some graphic design, office work and a bit of Garageband. This spec 21.5" should be enough..right?

Bought an i7 iMac in June. Originally planned to buy a Mac Book pro, but the money was nuts for what you were getting.

Running Windows 7 on it also through Parallels 5.0. Works fine, apart from the fact that you cannot use the firewire port through the VM.

Regarding the WiFi, I ended up hardwiring it - it was inconsistent, to say the least. There seem to be problems with it. This thread on the Apple forums is typical.

The Mac is a sweet machine. While you may think the 27" is overkill, if you can afford it, get it! The definition and clarity are stunning. Six months on (almost) and you still have a working operating system up and running in 52 seconds. Shuts down in 15 seconds. Windows 7 on the VM is, as you'd expect, beginning to clunk along, and getting slower starting up by the month.

27" core i7 imac, the absolute dogs, just bought 5 of them for a company I deal with and they're a beautiful machine, passing the xeons down the line, boot them into windows and I'm sure they'd run games without a hitch and a super 27" screen does the trick

Niall, do you do housecalls. I'm so ****ed. My new iMac won't be here for another few days but I need help getting into my finder and my 'home' folders???

Can't open mail now as I need to make room in the home folder. Can't make room in the home folder because my finder went on vacation.

Looking to hire an iMac repair tech asap for a housecall asap. Thanks, Thomas
