A couple of years ago I bought a mk2 MR2 Turbo, I became sensible and sold it a year later. I am toying with the idea of getting another import.. mr2, celica gt4 or something similar.

Looking on carzone these days there are very few imports now.. what has happened. 4 years ago it was flooded with them, are people just not buying anymore?

Its much more expensive to bring in imports now so old imports just change hands in Ireland and the rest simply become old and end up in scrap yards

Was this the VRT changes based on emissions?

Plus the Yen has remained strong against the Euro for nearly 2 years now.
But you seem more in to the older cars GT4's etc i'd say they are put away for the day they make a comeback as rarities which is not too far away!

    Driving imports myself over 10 years now,mostly Honda's :).

The new VRT system has a lot to do with it I'd say. Not only are the VRT rates higher on any tasty car you'd like to import, but if the revenue don't have the exact model on their system, they'll charge you the highest rate regardless.

Tax is a killer too. One of the lads was thinking of importing an EVO X but doesn't want to pay 2k tax a year.

    2K .
The prices have dropped considerably on Jap performance cars in Ireland in the last 2 years especially in the 2001+ market so i think considering importing your own car it would be at a big loss and a crazy thing to do.

I acquired an 03 DC5R in the summer for less than half what the lad paid for it when he imported it in late 08.
And the garages where looking for 8k more than it cost him to have it on the road at that time.

Still would love to import a nice car at some stage myself, preferably old school :).

As has been said, its gone very expensive to import from Japan, and even in Japan, the prices of the good cars are going up a huge amount.

Any of the cars already here are either being broken for parts or put away in the hope of better days.

I'm still driving my import every day though:D
