On a 99 diesel focus is the water pump driven by timing or fan belt. Does water pump need to be changed when timing belt is being changed....

Just checking this for you on Autodata, as far as I'm aware the WP is driven by the timing belt.

See attached Autodata sheet, just show's belt contacting fuel pump, camshaft and timing belt tensioner, doesn't show the water pump. This look up is for the 1.8 engine TD engine. If the water pump is driven by the alternator belt you should be able to confirm this is the case by inspection.

Here's the corresponding tech sheet from Autodata for a VW Golf which defo does have a timing belt that drives the water pump and it shows the water pump (WP), being driven by the timing belt, so I'd say your Focus if it is the 1.8 TD that I've done the lookup for, has a water pump that is NOT driven by the timing belt.

Sorry OP, to answer your question, if the water pump is not being driven by the timing belt then the failure of the water pump cannot cause damage that would be caused should the timing belt slip and the cause of that slippage would be the collapse of the water pump, as the water pump is out of the equation here at least in sofar as the timing belt is concerned. However there is a case to be made for replacing the pump in a 99 car while it's there in front of the mechanic and he's working in that area.

Hi I recently had my timing belt done on 03 1.8 tdci Focus and my mechanic(works in Ford garage) said no need to do water pump at same time as it doesnt run off the timing belt think its the altenator so I guess its the same set up for yours too. Cost me 180 for the timing belt and tensioners on my car.

Hit two birds with the one stone op. Water pumps arn't really that expensive anyway.
