Random Shutdown of Win 7

    Hi,

(Posted about a similar issue here before but it was a different laptop)

So, been getting random shutdowns with BSOD for the past while on an Asus UL30A Win 7 64bit Home Premium laptop

-thing is, the BSOD disappears so quick I can't even read it, then reboots the laptop. I can't find the .dmp file as the minidump folder does not appear to be where it should be...? I checked device manager and everything seems fine there also - I tired Google but can't find any other solutions/suggestions and thought you guys might be able to help...

Any ideas folks as it's so frustrating, it can go at any time!?

    Thanks in advance,

    JayC

BluescreenView is handy app for viewing info on bluescreens can be found at following link
    http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/blue_screen_view.html

I had same issues with a desktop PC and it was down to some faulty memory.

If there are no Dump files in C:windows\minidump but you are positive its blue screening the most likley cause is a faulty hard drive. Failure to communicate with the drive causes the above.

Cheers chaps, appreciate the help -

Thanks for the BSOD tool tip thorold, might come in handy ;)

Still have the same problem however, it appears that no 'minidump' folder even exists so no dmp file can be located!?

Are there any diagnostic tools that anyone knows of that I can run - I'm not sure what other options I have other than to pay someone to look at it at this point - don't really wanna waste cash either tho...

    Thanks folks ;)

Does it occur randomly or is the machine always on for a while before it happens?

I'd test your memory as above. If you boot from your OS disk there should be diagnostic tools included.

Disable Automatic Restarts by following these instructions:
    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/windows7/ht/automatic-restart-windows-7.htm

On the same window you will be able to change the logging option to a "Small Dump File" (I think I dont have acccess to a windows machine at the minute to check), then just make sure the Dump file folder changes to %SystemRoot%\Minidumps

As soon as it crashes upload a dump file and I will check it for you (Or learn how to use Windows Debugging Tools, just google it)

    Cheers folks,

Have done all of the above - no issues after testing memory and disabled 'auto restart' as Hearney suggested. Only thing is the laptop has not crashed since...!!!

Will report back when/if it crashes again... ;)

@Lethal Bullet: it's an Asus UL30A so there's no disc drive - thanks for the tips tho

    Hey folks,

Unfortunately it crashed again - below is a copy of the error message, anyone have any ideas what it means...?

    Cheers

Have you contacted ASUS technical support?

    Hey folks,

Apologies for bringing up an old topic again but I stil haven't sorted out the issue...

So, I've been in contact with Asus tech support as the laptop is still under warranty. However, they are requesting that I wipe my machine and perform a fresh os install before they'll even look at it, they wouldn't even offer any insight into what the error message represents. I've posted it again below - anyone got any ideas as to what it might be linked to? - I don't really want to have to wipe my machine if I can help it so thought I'd check here again to see if anyone could help!

Its hard to say whats causing that error, other than some process is not getting along with the kernel and it's making things kerplode.

    "SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED"

ASUS Is doing what it can. The easiest thing on their end is to rule out a user error and the best way to do that is to reformat. They support the Hardware, not the Software. Reformatting is really not that frightening to do, and once you've backed up your files you can reformat and be back on your new clean desktop in about 45 minutes. I've reformatted multiple times since getting my laptop and I'll eventually have to reformat my Desktop: They just run much better with a fresh wipe periodically. The longer you leave a PC without one, the more unsolved errors you pick up until they make you want to pull your hair out. Sure you can spend a few days trying to figure out the root cause of this problem, but you're really just wasting time that could be saved by reformatting, generally. I remember back in the days when I was afraid to do so I'd spend days and weeks solving one problem only to find/create another, and it was like whack-a-mole until one day your PC wouldn't start up at all.

I would suggest a full format and reinstall of windows. Either your hard-drive is faulty or the NTFS partition has something wrong with it.
