Hi, im thinking of importing an E60 bmw, when will the VRT information be updated on regards the OMSP? I.e. does it make sense to wait till the new year?

hi mate,i know this is an old thread but just wondering if you found out if it would be worth waiting till jan?im in the same boat now and comtemplating buying an english but wondering will their valuatioin of the car drop considerably in jan or do they just do it on a month by month basis. They have drastically over valued the car im looking at as it is but wondered would i be better off hanging on to buy in jan it or even buy it and leave it off the road until then.

The biggest problem is there's a budget before the new year.

i seriously doubt it, i checked the vrt on a 2008 1.4 toyota auris yesterday and it gave the vrt as €2,400 and the OMSP as €19,950..

dont even think the car cost that brand new in 2008.

    fookin rip off ireland.

OMSP rates a calculated month by month and drop accordingly.

I'd personally hang fire till Jan and see what shakes out in the Budget. Sterling's not going to harden up anytime soon, the recession's pretty bad in the uk and they want to keep their currency devalued.

tell me about it,is a joke,im looking at a 08 mondeo and they have valued it at nearly 13k when i have seen the exact same model car and engine size on carzone for 10k with less mileage then the one im looking at.with the vrt just under 2600 at a rate of 20%.i half thinking of buying it and paying the vrt and then appealing it.have heard they might offer a refund to the tune of some of the vrt paid if i can prove they have in fact over valued it.I have seen a good few of the same model around the 10k mark online.anyone ever hear of anyone successfully appealing a vrt price though?

Both myself and a friend have got refunds on vrt. In my case a fiesta style was valued higher than a ghia model so partial refund given. My friend got a nearly new avensis that didn't show up on vrt system so vrt was charged on the brand new price, again a partial refund was given. The appeal system is easy enough and they seem to be fair in their judgements.

nice one mate, might do that so.what did you have to produce to prove their over valuation though?it would hardly suffice to produce a couple of printouts of other cars from carzone would it?

Yes it would, anything that shows the vrt valuation to be too high will help your case. In my case I just wrote that a Style model is worth less than a Ghia model and should be valued as such, I photocopied some adds that backed it up and sent it off. Remember, the person who decides your appeal is just as rational as you and if there is clearly an error, they should find in your favour.

well it nearly would in fairness, would work out near the same anyway.im going to buy it and look for a reduced rate on vrt, there is a few of them on carzone for around the 10k mark and all from garages so how can they not refund the difference?i prefere buying an english car as they always have full service histories and and in general a better spec and better looked after car(their roads being a damn sight better then ours for starters)ill be sure to come back and let you know how i get on :)

further to this,i read in the above guidelines the statement " a declaration of OMSP made by a franchised distributor" which to me reads a valuation from a ford dealer who,as with everything from parts to actual cars, also greatly inflate their prices.I have found the exact model of the car im looking at importing, right down to same mileage and colour(in fact id nearly say it was the same car only for it has a dublin reg) for sale in a garage in dublin for €9450.what im wondering is if the lovely people at the vrt will accept this valuation from an independent dublin garage or will it have to be a ford dealers valuation. Is the quote above from the vrt appeals page really them covering their asses once again and ensuring the maximum inflated price for the vehicle?Or will they defo take a price from carzone or cbg?

There is no definate about it, I would not buy a car on the basis that i would definatley get the quoted VRT reduced. However, the guidelines say nothing about franchised dealers, just dealers in relation to advertised prices. There is no franchise that is going to help you buy from someone else.

I've been talking to dealers here in relation to new cars (Jan delivery), and they're not won't commit to new car prices either, as they're expecting VRT changes (i.e increases:mad:) in the budget that will effect these too.
