It was "a great pity" that people don't use our democracy to engage in debate, she said. "Politics is about choices, it's about arguing and debate. It's not about engaging in public disorder offences or indulging in activity of that kind.”

    Mary Harney
    12-Nov-10
After eggs and cheese thrown at her car.

    Same day

THE GOVERNMENT is to seek an early date for the hearing of its appeal against a High Court declaration that there was an inordinate delay moving the writ for the Donegal South West byelection.

As a result of the appeal, another challenge over delays in holding the Dublin South and Waterford byelections has been deferred to January 17th. The Supreme Court yesterday said it would deal next week with a State application for a priority hearing of the Donegal appeal after all relevant papers were lodged.

still though, what the hell is the point in throwing eggs and cheese at her?? Its the most ridiculous form of activism. People dont resign or change their political views because they had cheese thrown at them.

But they don't resign or change their political views when caught out in their private lives or being corrupt either.

They can't stoically ignore democracy and then complain when people act outside the democratic framework to be heard. Its an untenible position.

Dont get me wrong, your dead right about the hypocrisy. My comment was more 'on a side note'.

Ah but it's political double-speak at it's best, OP.

You're allowed to "engage in debate", but this government will (a) tell you you're cribbing and/or that your utterances are "putting the country at risk" (funny how that only applies to what others say & do, and not to what FF have done for years) and (b) ignore you and plough ahead regardless, probably telling you to emigrate or commit suicide.

Just don't expect to "engage in meaningful debate that results in a democratic decision that's in the best interests of the country and define an action plan detailing who will do what, by when, and who will be accountable".

For God's sake throwing food at Mary Harney will only encourage her!

But seriously this government has no interest in democracy. They're only trying to hold on to power long enough so that they can give themselves golden handshakes before they are voted out. They care little about the people of Ireland and only about themselves.
