Connect the two machines and copy/paste, or drag and drop.

 I wouldn't even know where to begin with that!

What type of cable do I need firstly?

    USB.

Easiest way is to get an external hard drive.
Connect it to computer 1 and open itunes library through the music files folder.
You can find this by going to 'my computer' then into the C drive.

Then just copy and paste the files to the external drive.

Then connect the drive to the computer 2, and copy and paste the files to the desktop.
When you open itunes, ituens should automatically find them on the desktop.

Note that any songs you have bought through itunes are copy protected.
But if you sign into your itunes account, it will offer to 're-download' these songs to the new computer, but you have to first 'authorise' his function in the itunes settings.
This can only be done on five computers.

    Good luck

Your Itunes library is in the itunes folder which is found in My Music/Music.

All you really need is blank DVD's and copy the folder to the DVD(s), put the dvd's into your new laptop and copy everything to music.

Assuming iTunes 10.1, click on 'Home Sharing' and follow the instructions here - http://help.apple.com/itunes/mac/10.1/interface/index.html#itns56cd6f5

Click on Show Steps (answer hopefully applies to OP as well)

i have copied over my music library over from my pc to my laptop
and all the songs are there, the only problem is that they dont play. I get the tab up saying'song cannot not be played because the voriginal file could not be found. do you want to locate it?'
then i open up itunes library but nothing happens - what have I done wrong?

Have you told iTunes where your library is located?
