For the first time this morning I listened to NEWSTALK with Ivan Yates - normally listen to Iano----Ivan had Prof. Ed Walsh as a guest speaker and if anybody heard him or gets a chance to listen to it on the web (if possible, don't know) it really spells out what contributed to the situation we find ourselves with regard to the Irish Economy. OK outside factors, etc. etc. but this guy knows what he is about and certainly, it made sense to me.

The interview was pretty long and it would be better for folk to check it out themselves....percentage quotes and all that and I don't want to get it wrong.

it was me, I DID IT, i contributed to the economic meltdown....i bought a HOUSE IN 2006! what was i thinking?! my family should have rented those last 7 years, we shouldnt have wanted our own piece of the earth. i should have listened to prinz and everybody else, i should have known i'd lose wages, that my house was overpirced, that i was a sheep. A SHEEP I TELL YOU.

i'm sorry everybody, sooo soo sorry. i'm a disgrace to humanity.

I'm an amateur economist and I did some study into this matter in my own time.

It turns out everyone is to blame except me.

We all must take equal collective responsibility for our present economic woe.
Especially those in the public sector, who are largely to blame.
The Colombian drug lords also, as the amount of Coke that flooded the market and took money out of the Economy was determential.
The Bulgarians, Spanish and Americans for making us buy properties in their countries, and leaving large Ghost estates in our once beautiful misty pastures.

I'd agree with most of what's said here, the core was a collective greed.

The country was never very rich until the time of the celtic tiger, so when we all started to feel the good times we didn't know what to do with ourselves, so we went mad with the money.

Then the banks got greedy, seeing everyone wanted to spend they made it too easy to get loans, and borrowing shot through the roof.

The government, only seeing the short term view of things thought this spending was great and let everyone run riot with almost no supervision.

Then it all fell apart and now we're where we are! Lame.

The Irish government for funding housing schemes and hotels in the middle of nowhere which fueled the property bubble, Anglo for making themselves bankrupt and having to be bailed out by you and me and the American government under GB for starting the whole recession in the first place.
