age rule Re:Adult games

    Can anyone tell me what the minimum age is for someone to play intermediate football.Basically my club played a 16 year old for an intermediate club match and its been suggested that this was against the rules.Can someone say if this is the case and if possible provide a link.I've looked but cant find anything.Thanks

    afaik 16 is ok as long as he's not eligible for under 16 games this year, so born in 1994 = not OK, 1993 = OK

    Think Ian_K is right - it's no more than 2 age groups away as I understand it. So if he's a minor, then you're okay. U-16 is three levels off (minor, U-21, then adult) so you'd be in trouble.

    Although in general, I don't like seeing young kids playing adult too early. You can play a couple of years out of your age at juvenile no problem but minors playing adult just doesn't sit right with me.

    Rule 6.18 OG 2009 - I don't think it hasn't changed much - check out www.gaa.ie and look for playing rules


    Age Grades
    To be eligible for the Grades listed hereunder, a player
    shall meet the respective stated age criteria:
    Adult: Be over 16 years.
    Under-21: Be Under 21 years and Over 16 years.
    Minor (Under 18): Be Under 18 years and Over 14 years.
    Under 16: Be Under 16 years and Over 12 years.
    Under 14: Be Under 14 years and Over 10 years.
    Under 12: Be Under 12 years and Over 9 years.
    To be “Under” an age shall mean that the player shall
    celebrate the Upper Limit birthday (e.g. 21st. for Under
    21 Grade) on the 1st. January of the Championship Year
    or on a later date.
    To be “Over” an age shall mean that the player shall
    have celebrated the Lower Limit birthday (e.g. 16th. to
    participate in Senior/Under 21 Grades) prior to the 1st.
    January of the Championship Year.
    Girls may participate only up to and including the Under
    12 Grade.
    Penalties:
    For Breach of Upper Age Limit:
    (i) Team Penalty:
    O n a Proven Objection – Award of Game to
    Opposing Team.
    Chapter 6
    GAMES &
    COMPETITIONS
    75
    O n an Inquiry by the Committee-in-Charge
    Forfeiture of Game without Award to the Opposing
    Team.
    (ii) Player:
    For breach in Under 16 or Younger Grades – 4 weeks
    Suspension.
    For breach in Minor or Under 21 Grades – 24 weeks
    Suspension.
    (iii) Person(s)-in-Charge of the Team in which the breach
    is committed – 48 weeks Suspension.
    (iv) Chairperson and Secretary of a Club:
    For breach in Minor or Under 21 Grades – 48 weeks
    Suspension.
    For Breach of Lower Age Limit:
    (i) Team Penalty:
    O n a Proven Objection – Award of Game to
    Opposing Team.
    O n an Inquiry by the Committee-in-Charge –

    Ya so a player must have been over 16 on the 1st of January 2010 (also making him overage for under 16 football/hurling) to be allowed play adult football/hurling

    This must be a new rule, as Niall Ronan (Cork inter-county hurler) played hurling for his club Ballyhea when he was 15.

    Ya its new enough, Kevin O'Brien won a senior county championship at 15 i think
