Basically I'm looking at buying my first gun and I reckon I'll be going for a Sarasqueta over and under with one trigger, multi choke, selective trigger, auto safe and ejectors that I've found. My budget is €400. I'm wondering what their like?
    Cheers

I used my fathers one for years, had no major problems with it. Was double trigger, my friend had 1 and it was single trigger it kept miss firing on the 2nd barrell, brought it to two gun smiths both said it was fine, but it still miss fired,

i went to trade in my fathers gun a few years ago and was offered e200,
id say shop around you might get a better gun for e400 now a day,

The one you describe sounds like one of their basic o/unders. There were several Sarasquetas and they produced a very wide range of guns - from top of the pile to very basic utility guns. Single triggers and Spanish guns are a bad combination - there is a long history of failure - and rarely are found on the better Spanish guns.
€400 is not a lot, buying at that price you probably will be disappointed in the long run. Better to go to 650 ish and buy a good second hand AyA boxlock.
For a first gun, multichoke is a distraction and not really necessary. Ejectors are also not necessary and in some instances are a nuisance (e.g. rough shooting). Auto-safe is pretty much standard.

Ya alot of people are complaining about the single triggers misfiring. I can get a Lanber for €380 too with fixed choke, single trigger and no ejectors. Would this be the better option ya?

my very 1st gun was a sarasqueta o/u double trigger and that was 25 years ago, i still have it and use it, never has it let me down in any shape or form, so for a 1st time gun, you wont go wrong.

Ya but I'd say thats one of the older models which have a great name. The newer models which this one is aren't supposed to be as reliable

Two cars are the same age, same milage. Which car would you buy?
VW Golf €650 or a Daewoo for €450??

Call to Pat Hayes in Mallow. He has Yildtz o/u's brand new for 550, lots of Baikals for 350 and less (Meant to be a pure work horse of a gun) Few Lanbers for around 450. Purchased one myself there last week

That's the Country Lifestyle shop is it? That's where this gun is like. There was no Lanber there the other day but I can get one for €380 in great condition

    Thats the very shop Tony.
I must have bought the last Lanber in there :D I talked to a few people about Lanbers and said there one of the best middle of the road shotties money can buy. Good quality, very reliable and hold their value well if in good condition.
If its your first gun do a competency course aswel as buying a gun. This is a requirement. I did mine last week as its my first gun. Pat does the course and you'll learn valuable things off him. Where abouts are you from?

Is this a requirement? Never knew this. I know lads that got their licenses in the last 2 months and never did this course.
Ya my uncle has a Lanber and its a great gun. I love it. I'll probably go for the Lanber I'd say.
    I'm in Carrigaline

If you want a good, strong reliable gun i would go for the Lanber... ive had a single trigger, fixed choked o/u for the last 10 years. ive done every type of shooting with it from fox drives, phesant, duck, rabbit, pigeon and clay pigeon shooting and Never had a bit of trouble or miss fires..... this is my view on Lanber, great all rounder....:D

I know a share of people from Carrigaline.
By law I think its a requirement for a first time applicant as a licence is awarded on your merits i.e; previous handling experience and courses completed. Open to correction on this. If what I said is 100% true then as with anything in Ireland, different areas/garda stations have different views and rules on this.
For your own sake do it! Invaluable knowledge to be gained from it. You wouldnt fly a passeneger plane without showing your competent would you?

Ya Jeffers has loads of guns. I'm going back to him in the afternoon I'd say to get a Lanber. Your man in Knocknagoshel said he hasn't much in the second hand range and that i'd be disappointed with the selection.

I've been to all 6 gun dealers in Cork plus Landers and Hailpins in Kerry

Thats why the skill of negotiation comes in :) I found Landers were pricey for the very few pre owned guns they had

Keep an eye out for small-name English boxlocks and the like around. You'll get some for very good money. Might not be your thing, but it's an option. You'll also find AyA boxlocks within your budget without much trouble if they suit.
