    Hi,
I my dad just bought me my first car,
But the owner could not find the log book. He said that hes applying for a replacement tomorrow. But he is moving abroad newt week. So if leaves before getting it to us then is there any way of getting it changed to my name?

Get the application form here for him, get it witnessed and send it in. The problem is that it'll still be in his name so when it comes out he needs to sign it and send it in again before you get it with new details on it.

    Bit messy situation.
    Cost €12

We went together to the garda station to get a form with him already.

Well it is in his best interest to get car signed over asap.
Any toll fines etc you clock up while driving "his" car goes to him.

Tbh, I don't get people that sell their car without paperwork.
That car could be stolen for all you know (prob isn't but hey)

fill out the second form changing the ownership from you to him and then you fill pout the first form and go the tax office with both forms and you will get the log book out to you i have done it in the past and has worked

Well I cant drive it yet. I assume I will need the log book to have it insured and nct done. And then the tax in a few months too?

But do you know if there is anyway around it if he doesnt get it to me?

The other way around - you must have current insurance to get it taxed and NCT'd unless you can move it on a trailer. Your insurance company / broker may ask to see the log book, but often they do not need to.

If his parents are still here maybe you can work something out with them?
Otherwise I'd be inclined to look at another car, there's plenty around.
But then again you already paid for it now.

Yea I already have the car in my garden. His parents are still living at the house that we went to buy from.

My sister sold her old car in the summer and could not find the VLC either. I think it took only a few days for the replacement to be posted out to her. Definately a week at most.

as i suggested would be the quickest and best for you the rf200 changing the car ownership from him to you the rf134 in your name to get a replacement log book in you name go to the tax office hand in the rf200 to change it then hand in the rf134 to get the replacement and in 3-5 working days you will have the log book for you car in your name posted to your address i have linked the website for both forms in my previous post

I bought a car recently and it was on collection that I discovered the log book was "missing" The owner promised he'd get it for me but then fobbed me off and eventually stopped answering my calls and texts.

I got onto DOT in Shannon and they forwarded me on an "Acquired Declaration" form which I had to fill in. I then had to get a garage to check over the car to verify the vin no. and stamp it. I then had to go to a solicitor and have it stamped by him. Then, off to the DOT in Shannon again with the new form.

It's not impossible to get but it isn't easy - if you can't sort out the log book, get a signed statement from the seller. It will make things a lot easier with the solicitor.

I actually kinda got a receipt. It was just on a piece of paper it said
    :
    99D*****
    Sold on 11/11/2010
Then it has his name and address
    And he signed it.

That may help me if he doesn't get it sorted.

He was told at the garda station that he would have to get the new logbook before changing the name.

How long did it take for you to have it changed?

    2-3 weeks altogether.

After the "Acquired Declaration" form was sent off to Shannon, they forwarded it onto my local tax office which sent it back to me, to complete the RF134 along with 12 euro fee. There's a lot of to-and-fro'ing!

How much would a solicitor charge for something like this ? seems like alot of hassle.

I think it's normally about a tenner but I got lucky and the solicitor I visited didn't want anything:)
