I've got my 1984 944 since July 2000, bought it when I lived in Jersey as a 25th birthday present to myself, brought it back when I moved home, it's sitting in my dad's yard now waiting till 2014 and I'll be able to afford to tax it.

Great thread, I have never held onto a car longer than 3 years myself,

but I don't think any of us can beat a certain Mr Allen Swift from Massachusetts, who received a brand new Rolls Royce Phantom 1 from his dad as a graduation present in 1928, and he has owned and driven this car all of his life, until he died in 2005, aged 102 !!!!!

My 1969 Reliant Regal 3/30, I've had since 1991. It was on the road at the start of 1992, and back off around June 1992. Since then it's been a long term project. It was my 3rd car at 17, preceded by a 1968 Wolseley 16/60 auto and a 1980 Citroen Dyane 6.

Other cars I've had nowhere near as long, I think the longest after that was around 10 years.

Ha! Enjoy the honeymoon period! I always thought that at first and then you get the "itch". Sometimes the itch is prompted by a large bill on the horizon or a classified ad. I love my 924 but I know next year or the year after I'll spot an old Lancia that won't take no for an answer.

Of course those lucky enough to have somewhere to store more than one or two cars, don't have the same issue. But I've always thought one of the benefits of loving older cars is you can chop and change without losing out financially like you would a modern. Seems a shame not to play the field!

Cant match the Rolls above but it comes close.

This is Augusto Macedo, born in 1902 and who was a Taxi driver in Lisbon from 1928 until 1996 when he gave up for health reasons. The big story here is that he drove the same taxi all his life until his retirement in 96, a 1928 Oldsmobile F-28. The car laid back well over 2,000,000 km and Augusto did all the repairs on it himself until his retirement.

A documentary film was made of him in 1996, called Taxi Lisboa, I've seen it and its a worthy portrait of a true gentleman. Augusto died on January 17th 1997, the day the film was officially released in Portugal.

The taxi can be seen during the winter months in the Camara Municipal de Lisboa and in summer at the Pateo da Gale. There is also a street named after him in Lisbon.

Theres also this guy, I remember him from working in Berlin in the 90's.
The taxi is a 1964 model and he's been driving it since 1969. He used to have a long grey beard to go with the long grey hair back then.

What mileage is on that?? I haven't seen one in Ireland in years. Was in France during the summer and the odd one still limps around there. My Dad bought a new one in 1984 and kept it 3 years. I would've only been 6 when he sold it but I have vague memories of it all the same. The old man reckons it had seats like an armchair but as a car was a flimsy and unreliable piece of work. Funny enough in about 1998 we got a bit of painting of the house done. The lad we usually got was sick and recommended a guy he knew from another area. The guy showed up driving...none other than the same 1984 Renault 9. It was on it's 2nd engine and trans by then and was dog rough (literally - the guy's dog lived in the car). These were pre-nct days of course. We got a spin in it from him for old times' sake. The guy finished the job and we never saw him or the car again

it has about 120k it needs a bit of welding underneath because it was never garaged at night , but every thing is original on it bar a headlamp , my uncle done any servicing or repairs on it himself . the paint on the outside of the car is gone flat and it needs a respray hopefully in the next year or so i will get a chance to get it back in shape
