Want to travel up to dublin for a day return on Sunday 14th from Ballina to Dublin - just went on line to get a webfare for 25 euro return but the 18.30 last train home no longer has web allocation - the standard day return is 48.50, four of use would be travelling - two adults two children - ok should have booked earlier - but crissake what a difference in price total cost for two adults and two childre is nearly 150 return!

And they wonder why we are all using our car.

The webfares are intended to try get people to use off peak trains. The Sunday trains are usually the busiest of the weeks so any of the discounts don't usuall apply then, sorry to say.

They may well have sold out - then normal fares apply.

driving will be faster and a hell of a lot cheaper and more comfortable than the train with the opportunity to stop on route for refreshments at a reasonable price!

Whatever about the price but I don't think you have driven to North Mayo before if you think driving is much faster than train, especially when you add on a stop for a break/food.

    train is 3hrs 40 min

google maps say 3 hrs 5 mins, without taking into account the updated motorway sections

So even with a generous half hour stop its much quicker and more direct door to door. You don't need to stop really on a three hour journey either.

Google Maps is a wee bit optimistic with that time; it can be done I agree but that's with putting the foot down, a clear road and of course no stop. Door to door, you may need to add on a bit more :)

I don't think its that optomistic. if traffic is bad then it'll be slower of course but given most people will be doing well over 100 or 120 on the various sections you will probably finish it even quicker than that. Even a BE bus can do it timetabled for 3hr 55.

My dad is originally from Mayo and we have driven Kerry to Mayo in 3 hours and Dublin to Mayo in just under 3 hours. I would drive anywhere in Ireland rather than take the train if at all possible.

You've probably never needed to drive from Westland Row to Amiens St during rush hour then....
    :D

What part of Mayo to that part of Dublin, there'd be a wee difference between Balbriggan to the south of Erris and from Leixlip to Cong...

google can do ballina to heuston station by road in 3hours 7minutes but the best irish rail can do is 3hours 40minutes!

I've just looked at the website and guess what every last train out of Heuston on Sunday night is sold out for the next four weeks - in other words they don't actually offer web fares on these trains - which rather kicks them into touch for many people.

Peak travel books out quicker so off peak fares may either be booked out or not offered on this service.

So why are you bothering to post in a public transport thread?

Peak travel books out quicker so off peak fares may either be booked out or not offered on this service.

What annoys me is that they claim you can only book on the web 28 days in Advance so that only takes you up to December 12th and guess what:

The following last trains out of Dublin on Sunday 12th December are all showing as Online allocation sold out! And this on on the monday four weeks before - Sold out? I don't think these seats ever existed in which case IE are contravening advertising standards.

From Connolly to Sligo: 19.05 on line allocation sold out December 12th

From Connolly to Belfast : 19.00 on line allocation sold out December 12th

From Heuston to Limerick: 21.25 on line allocation sold out December 12

And here is what makes me deeply suspicious, if I ask for a booking from Dublin to Galway – the last train showing on the system is the 21.25 to Limerick and then to wait for the 06.00 from Limerick to Galway on Monday morning 13th December. – In other words IE are saying this route has sold out on line.

    And finally:

From Heuston to Cork: 21.00 on line allocation sold out December 12

I don’t believer the “On line allocation” for these last trains on a Sunday are sold out – I don’t believe IE company is being honest – I don’t believe there ever was an on line allocation for these trains, so these services should be clearly labelled as not available for certain fares.

It basically means if you want to book a fare on line to Dublin you cannot come back on the last train on Sunday using a web based fare. IMO IE are being misleading in their advertising.

The ad isn't misleading as it doesn't say you can book any given fare on any given train for €10 or any amount. You can book a fare right up until Sunday 12th, just not at a discounted price which may well be sold out already or they may not be on offer for said train.

If you feel that they are misleading, take it up with the ad standards people :)

All of those trains are working perfectly for me. No problem at all.

might be something to do with my browser. All I know is at 22 Euro return I would use the train whenever I went up to Dublin. At 44 Euro return I would not - and would take the car.
