iPhone 3G Reboot loop

I have an iphone 3g running ios 4.0.1 jailbroken with jailbreakme.

Today, I used the erase all content and settings option. The phone did its thing with the progress bar and restarted. Then it froze and resterted again and this carried on in a loop.

I need to get it recognised in iTunes to update/restore (i have SHSHs saved) but I can't seem to get it in DFU mode. The furthest screen i get is the apple logo with a frozen progress wheel and a pixelated line at the top of the screen.

You could try using TinyUmbrella to put it in recovery mode. Just connect it to the PC, run (latest version of) tinyumbrella and press "Enter Recovery mode". Failing that, try using the latest version of redsn0w or pwnagetool to put it in a special "pwned" DFU mode. Run redsn0w and follow instructions.

If either of the above don't work just turn the iPhone on and let it loop and loop for ages, maybe it will start up eventually!

I had a similar problem with my iPhone 3G. What I did was unplug the USB when it was half way through restoring. Chances are you will just get an error when doing this, but once you hit restore again it would restore it properly and boot into the iPhone menu. What also worked for me is leaving it to constantly reboot and it would eventually boot up, but would vary in time when it would actually boot up. I later discovered though that my iPhone was broke as this problem became more common.

I can relate to your iPhone problems, my 3GS decided to corrupt its nand today and has completely **** itself and bricked. 20 days out of warranty, means 211 euro repair. Cryface. I thought the dfu mode solved everything :(

One of the very few ways of actually truly bricking an iPhone is to unplug it during a restore

Yep that's true, but my iPhone was constantly rebooting and was at the stage of being unusable so I had nothing to loose if it totally corrupted it or bricked it. OP keep trying to restore it too, mine would eventually restore after many attempts.

Chin up! I got mine working again! persevere with the DFU mode. I let my battery die and the plugged it in to charge with iTunes running. When I saw a flash on the screen I tried the DU mode buttons and got it on the second go.

I found it closer to 6 seconds using the highly scientific one-mississippi two-mississippi... method.

I wish, DFU mode works, recovery mode is functioning. It's just got no flash memory anymore unfortunately. Somehow it's corrupted beyond repair.

I thought you meant the data on the nand memory got corrupted. If it wasnt user inflicted damage i'd try for the warranty route before. i rang up apple about a just-out-of-warranty ipod mini before and said I didn't have the receipt as it was a gift, but I've had it for just short of a year. They took this at face value and replaced the ipod for me.

Somebody also mentioned on the thread here recently where somebody was asking about lying to apple, that the sometimes go ablove and beyond warranty terms to keeps customers happy - I think the example given was someone dropping an iphone down stairs and getting a replacement and only paying 30 euro for shipping or something
