Energy efficient single-room heating?

Hey everyone - Our electric and oil/heating bills look like they're going to be fairly high this year. Higher than I had anticipated, as our home is relatively drafty (2 open fireplaces, not-so-great insulation, and we live in a very windy estate) and large...

We've reduced our usage as best we can by closing off rooms not in use (and closing the rads in there), setting the central boiler on a timer (only comes on 2x daily unless we need more heat - then we manually switch on + off). Even so, some days it is impractical to use central, as we're only ever occupying one room at a time. We use the fireplaces at night if we're going to be in the room for several hours. But there are times when this isn't practical...

So my idea is to buy an energy efficient portable heater. Electric/oil-filled radiator, etc.

I'd like suggestions on the most energy (and cost) efficient form of heating that is safe + portable so we can use it in the sitting room by day and the bedroom by night.

Wondering what u decided on in the end & did it work thru the severe cold we had?
When we owned a house we got a solid fuel stove with back boiler. It wasn't perfect but it was a lot better than open fire
    .
In rented place now so options more limited but I'm considering a little stove that cud b removed when we move out

Portable gas heater - Superser perhaps?
The oil filled radiators take a while to take the chill out of the room, the gas heaters heat the room quicker, but the byproduct is water so an increase of condensation.

something that's thermostatic controlled would be best surely, superser's aren't are they?
