Tooth extraction and abscess questions

I went to the dentist today because I had an abscess on my gum caused by a decayed tooth. It's caused quite a bit of swelling in the gum and my cheek. At first he was going to prescribe me antibiotics and then remove the tooth another day but after taking an x-ray he decided to just pull the tooth today and not prescribe antibiotics at all (he was reluctant to prescribe them as I have Crohn's although I've never heard of them causing any complications). He said since the tooth was gone that the abscess should heal itself in a few days.

What I want to ask is how will it heal itself? , sure the source of the infection is gone but the infection itself is still there. Any information I've found on the internet says for an abscess, especially one which has spread to the cheek , antibiotics are needed. Should I visit my GP and look for a prescription? Also if they're not necessary and it will heal itself, how long will it take the swelling in my cheek to go down. My friend's birthday is this weekend and I've got college as well but it's so bad I don't want to leave the house but I really can't miss them either.
