    hi guys,

im 6ft 18 stone guy and have taken to the guy for the winter, i know some people train out doors all winter but i like my heat and hate the wind..

so basically im new to running last spring, i am not what you would call v fit but i do got stamina.

i was wondering what sort of time on a treadmill relates to the road, on the road i can do 5min k's not easily but within reason have a 5k pb of 24.10. last few nites ive been in the gym i can not get my 5 k time below 27mins! seems madness i startt out with the machine at 5min k's but i can not stick the pace on it..is this bad or wat am i doing wrong??

    any ideas for me??

Probably not exactly what you want to hear, but I think you will soon hate the treadmill more than the wind. I recommend going outside.

I wouldn't get too caught up in speed on a treadmill. I use lots of different gyms and find all the various treadmills different....some are not level so have an incline you're not aware of, the speeds are not calibrated..12km/hr seems fast on one and slow on another.

You style of running on the road might also not be suited to running on a treadmill and also, your speed in training on the road, is this accurate from a garmin or estimated from measuring the route on mapmyrun?

If you feel you are putting the same effort in on the treadmill, then don't worry about the speed, its only a number. Try to stick with the same treadmill, that way at least you'll be able to gauge if you are improving. Also always put a little bit of incline on, 0.5% or 1%.

I have been wondering about this lately myself and found this discussion thorough and helpful

I think Gringo78 summed it up well though- Just don't get hung up on numbers.
