    Hi all,
If you owned a laptop with say, widows 7 installed. can you legally install that on another machine in your home without paying for another licence??

Depends on the type of licence.

If it is an OEM licence then you cannot transfer it.

Not sure if it is still true but OEM licence used to have OEM in the licence number.

ok, Im not sure what type of licence it is but i just bought it for personal use from harvey norman. So im probably not able to do it.

Now remove the "legally" part from my first post. Is it possible to do?
(dont wanna know how, just wondering to be honest)

As a second copy or transfer to another PC?

If you got Win 7 preinstalled with the laptop it is most likely OEM and cannot be transfered to another laptop. It is tied to the hardware.

Licence Key should be on a sticker on the bottom of the laptop and will indicate the type of licence.

    ok thanks for the replies,
I wont ask anymore dogdey qestions:)
Just as regards this OEM licence, just say you wanted to ugrade your machine but were happy eith the OS, if you had an OEM licence you could not transfer it to the new machine and so would have to fork out for another Win 7, vista or whatever ??

    Microsoft are not a charity.

With OEM you have these choices
    a) accept the license agreement - license is forever bound to the machine it was bought with

    b) accept the license agreement - and buy an upgrade to a different version of windows- the upgrade is forever bound to the machine and the original license dies - so not onlyis the license non-transferable it will also poison upgrade licenses

    c) ask the computer manufacutrer for your money back (only if you can Prove you didn't use windows )

If you want an OS with out paying for it then choose Linux or BSD or Solaris or well just about every other desktop OS out there apart from Apple / Microsoft

also you can get up to 240 days trial usage with windows server.,

Read the EULA that came with your copy of windows
