Are new planets and stars still being formed or is the universe just getting bigger with the number of objects remaining the same and being spread further apart?

New stars and planets are still being formed in areas like the Orion Nebula. Nebulae are large clouds of Hydrogen gas, which are the building blocks for stars. When stars are "born", planets often form from the leftovers of the stellar formation. Also when massive stars explode in supernovas, they throw lots of heavier elements back out into space for future stellar and planetary formation. That's where all the elements, except Hydrogen and Helium, were created - inside stars. It won't last forever though, the hydrogen will run out eventually but not for billions of years.
