Does it matter which way one places the PS3? I have mine standing vertical for years.

Which way do you have your PS3? 22 votes

I've always had it in my head that disk drives were designed to be horizontal, so I never stand mine up. It's probably nonsense, but I won't change now!

    Tallon,

Well, buddy, I am on my SECOND refurbishment unit.... Hope yours is okay:) Got the original when it first came out, had to do the €120(maybe it was €160) thing to Sony in June last year, had to return it again this July (had to pay a further €15.60), so I am on my third PS3 now. Initially I though Tiger Woods PGA busted it (please see previous post), now I am worry it's the way I am placing it.... Maybe you are right, it may have nothing to do with it...

    Thanks anyways.

Horizontal for me, was way too worried when i bought the original launch model that it would be knocked over, pricey at the time !
Also think that disk drives work better not fighting gravity !

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,565 ✭✭✭✭Tallon

Apparently the originals were prone to BD drive failure from standing up

    I have the slim btw

May just switch mine to horizontal from now on... just to be on the safe side.

Mine's standing, no room to put it horizontal with the sky box and NES under the telly.

60GB standing vertically and has been since for ages.

40 GB standing vertically for 2 years, no problems so far

    Kinda off topic but...

Its important that where ever you keep your PS, Xbox, Wii etc that they aren't stacked onto top of eachother or in tight spaces next to Sky Boxes and dvd players. If they can't dissapate heat well enough they'll eventually over heat and short circuit or the fan will break from over use. Some sky boxes can get very hot and even keep dvd boxes on top of them can cause problems, depends on the model though.

60gig lying horizontally and always has been

mine is vertical specifically so i dont end up with stuff on top of it. i think you can have it either way so long as you clean it gently regularly with an old toothbrush or a very gentle long distance hoovering! slightly off topic but when my mate brought his for repair recently the guy in console repair told us that the reason his laser went was cos he was smokin in the same room as the ps3 and the tar built up on it together with household dust so as previously mentioned, just keep it clean and well ventilated and you should be fine!!

You know the disc is round right?

So the weight if it being pulled up is negated by the weight of the opposite portion of the disk going down, all the motor is doing is overcoming inertia/drag, same as when its horizontal.

I thought of that when i was posting, it depends whether the tray has the little 'tabs' which will keep the CD/DVD from falling out.
Not sure of the insides of the blu ray drive even though I've had a few taken apart.

40GB phat horizontal for the past 2.5 years (no problems yet).. didn't even realize that wasn't the only option.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,785 ✭✭✭eddhorse

Well Sony do make a vertical stand for the PS3 so cant be all bad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭Scráib

If the PS3 was vertical then logically all the heat would rise up and go out the vents at the top, but if left horizontally the heat might have difficulty escaping the case. That said if there was actually a 'better' position then surely someone would have pointed it out by now, so I reckon it's purely an ascetic choice.

I'm thinking of putting my PS3 standing up but the only place I can leave it is on top of a subwoofer. I'm going to assume that the vibrations from the woofer would cause damage to the machine though, so for the time being it's a flat phat.

My PS3 is a soldier, then after two years, the fan started to go like a jet engine for any game after 20 minutes of play. I took it out and hoovered every vent. Quiet as a mouse ever since.

I do a lot of PS3 repairs and I would always recommend vertical as the ps3 fans are at the bottom of the ps3, not the sides. Also it does not affect the blu ray drive in any way whatsoever.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,785 ✭✭✭eddhorse

Makes sense about the vents i guess, i just know if i move it to vertical my blu ray will go bang !

Have had mine vertical for 3 years now without any problems (probably tempting fate by saying that!!)
As was said above, the vents are on the bottom of the unit so it makes more sense to have it that way

A real man doesn't have the room to spare because of all the other cool **** he's got around the TV!

Horizontal for me. Phat 60g launch day model (I love saying that)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 26,726 ✭✭✭✭noodler

Horizontal for me. I just make sure I have no other heat-producing machines in or around it.

NTL box, Reciever etc are on different shelves.

Also, I'd knock it over if it was vertical - no doubt about it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,608 ✭✭✭irish_stevo815

I have mine standing up vertical. The same with our 360.

I think they look a bit odd when they are laying horizontal

I have mine horizontal and always have, but this post seems to make an insane amount of sense to me.

Mine has always been horizontal. It's not going to tip over if it somehow picks up a knock, thus there will be no laser burn on any disks.

Have a slim over a year and it's been vertical all that time.

Any chance a poll could be added to this thread? Would be interesting which orientation people found to have the most issues.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,230 ✭✭✭Wetbench4

Mine's an original 60GB and its been flat on its back since day one with not a single problem. Same with the 360, and the ps2 i had before these. They just don't seemed to be designed to be stable standing on their edge, imo.
I don't think the heat will pool in the console when it horizontal because the fans keep the air moving so it doesn't get a chance but you never see horizontal desktop pc's these days so i'm probably completely wrong.

You don't but desktops don't tend to have vents in the top though as has been mentioned in this thread. Well not the ones I'm familiar with.

Mine is also always been flat, it just works better for me that way.

Mine is Horizontal in a cupboard, with all the other hifi equipment, power amps, radiator piping etc. Must be constantly above 20 degrees in there.
    No issues thus far.

PS3 60GB, second one as the first one encountered a bluray disc problem. Second one has lasted 3years or so, and it has been vertical all the way!

No Its the over way round, have it standing up allowing the heat the exit better. My first 2 ps3 were horizontal had died from yellow light of death and broken bluray lens. Ive had it vertical since and no probs.

I really depends which allows the better air-flow, warm air rises so if it doesnt matter then standing is better.

Could maybe more options be added to the poll to get an idea if there may be a pattern to PS3s failing due to their orientation?

    Something like:

    Horizontal no issues
    Horizontal Have had issues
    Vertical no issues
    Vertical Have had issues

Mine was horizontal all along but recently moved the PS3 upto my room and now its vertical due to space restrictions. Still has enough space around it to dissipate heat and all...
