Star Wars box set in Blu ray

Hi all, I wonder if anyone could help. A friend of mine is looking for the Star Wars boxset in Blu Ray for her son for Christmas. Play.com is selling it for around €100 but on further googling other sites are saying that it's not going to be released until next year. There are even quotes from George Lucas saying the same thing. I'm confused, if it's not supposed to be released until next year, is the one on Play.com legit? I've never had a problem with the website before. Also could anyone advise if blu ray is region free? I'm not very good at this stuff! :o

    Thanks in advance!

Play.com only have it as a placeholder, you can't order it yet. It isn't out until next year.

If your friend wants a Star Wars series on Blu-Ray, the first two seasons of The Clone Wars will be available before Christmas.

    Hi Redmal,

just to point out, none of the six movies have been released on BluRay and will not be released until Autumn 2011 so I'm not sure what you're looking at that cost €100 but it's not the movies. I'm guessing it was probably this?

I checked play and these are the following matches
    http://www.play.com/Search.html?searchstring=star+wars&searchtype=BLU&searchsource=0

To my knowledge the only SW titles that have been released on BluRay are the first two seasons of the animated TV show "The Clone Wars". The matches on play appear to back this up.

The option for region encoding is there. It's so long since i bought a BR Disk that i can't remember how much it's used.

Fox probably would use it tho.

So I'd imagine it would be the same here:

    http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/20/star-wars-blu-ray-discs-to-arrive-september-27th-according-to-am/
Star Wars Blu-ray discs to arrive September 27th according to Amazon

By Richard Lawler posted Jan 20th 2011 3:48PM

Even a flashy CES announce event wasn't enough for Fox and George Lucas to reveal an exact release date for the arrival of Star Wars on Blu-ray, but now Amazon has updated its preorder ship dates to September 27th. We wouldn't schedule a day off of work to dive into the promised 30 hours of special features until there's some sort of official word, but since it is a Tuesday it seems a logical time to expect these discs (in full Complete Saga form or either trilogy set by itself, you choice) to touch down. Relive the somewhat underwhelming Darth Vader entrance and the much more inspiring Blu-ray boxed set trailer after the break.

Got it earlier, it's a lovely set. Won't be watching them just yet though!

Arrived in the post today from Amazon.co.uk. Despite having PowerDVD 10 Ultra mk.II, I am apparently not allowed to play these discs as an update is required and cyberlink's own software detection system sucks f*ck (on top of sucking f*ck for requiring IE to work in the first place). Instead, we are required to email them [Cyberw*nk] and await a response.

    Not cool.

Still waiting for Cyberw@nk to get back to me ...

I feel like I've stepped back in time with the internet to 1992; not feeling like we're in 2011 and this kind of bullsh*t is easily avoided.

    nooooooooo, NOOOOOOOO!!!!

    lol

Patch released by Cyberlink, but the CPU usage is insane, with periodic stuttering due to it :-/

Apparently, using AnyDVD (Slysoft) it all works just fine, so it's a BD encryption thing and cyberlink not handling it properly.

I watched the throne room scene from Ep.VI last night after patching, and dear god is it appalling. The childish "NOOOo" just detracts from the gravity of the scene entirely. It'd be like watching the scene from Schindlers List where Oscar & his wife must flee and he's seeing so much more that he could have done to save just a handful more lives, and then some little loud tubby German kid comes running across the screen with chocolate all over his hands and face; it's a total jolt that distracts from everything else that's going on for no good reason.

Does anyone know how much these are on the High Street (in Dublin)? I've got a load of HMV vouchers so was looking to head into Grafton Street next week to pick this set up.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,920 ✭✭✭AnCapaillMor

79.99 in HMV the day of relase or 39.99 for each of the trilogies(save yourself a cent). 94.99 in tesco.

still the same price yesterday 80bucks in HMV

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭Beefy78

    That's no Blu-Ray box set...

    It's a space station.

I must watch the DVD's to verify if i'm going mad or not but i'm pretty sure vader's eye didn't have a red tint in previous editions. He seems to have the tint in a new hope.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,905 ✭✭✭bucks73

I noticed that too the other night...never noticed it before but it was very prominent.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,920 ✭✭✭AnCapaillMor

Yeah no sign of it in ESB or ROTJ(so far only as far as the sarlac scene).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,166 ✭✭✭Beefy78

I was in the UK at the weekend so picked this up at HMV in Stansted Airport for £56. Looking forward to watching it over the next week or so, probably starting with Ep.1 tonight.

Vader's eyes did have a red tint in ANH, I remember that detail from my SW figure collecting days!

ok as i have them all on dvd, do you think its really worth it getting the blu ray version?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,980 ✭✭✭Dotrel

I'm working my way through the set now and I have to say I'm impressed with this presentation. I've finished the three prequels and bonus disk 1 so far and it really looks a good set.

The picture looks great of course but what I came here to mention was that I am very impressed with the "play all" feature on the bonus disk. It's something that's so obvious and that I've been calling out for for years and to my knowledge it's the first set that actually will play every bonus feature in sequence with one click of a button.

LOTR:SE DVD's came close to a "play all" option for special features but technically it didn't do everything. SW blu is finally a BD that will simply play every feature that is on the disk without having go thru menu's if you don't want to.

DVD manufactures seem to think there's still some novelty value in clicking thru endless menus and submenus to see whatever special features are on the disk and while you do this you hope you don't miss anything. Like PIP and 'easter eggs' I find DVD/BD menu's themselves to be a useless way of presenting bonus material and I for one could do without it. Hopefully this SW set will send the message to other future blu-ray releases

If you're a first time viewer I'd say watch them 456123

If you've seen them before and know the story then I'd say 123456. As a bonus you get the crappy prequels out of the way first and can look forward to the good movies after that.

Personally I would watch it 4 5 6 2 3. The thought of sitting through two hours of Jar Jar Binks and Anneeeeee is too much to bear.

Anneeeeee 'seducing' Padme in Ep2 is an even lower point in the movies.

Lucas should have farmed that subplot out cos he didn't know how to write it. Even I could have written better dialogue.

Just watched episode I - was very impressed with the DTS sound and the transfer - looks really well.

Wasn't a great film and JJ Binks is so f*cking annoying, his scenes should have
been cut - they added absolutely nothing to the film.

Looking forward to the rest of them - especially the originals - though I have heard Lucas butchered the Throne Room scene.

The original release schedule I find works for me.

I started with the PT. Gives me something to look forward to as I'm going through them (although I actually quite enjoyed Phantom Menace this time around).

Can anyone please tell me how much the original Trilogy Blu ray set is in Tesco's at the moment, my local store doesn't stock Blu ray's?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,556 ✭✭✭the_monkey

Just after finishing the set, what the hell was Lucas thinking with the Throne room "NO NO NOOOO" ??? !!!!

was he taking the piss - ? has to be a windup...

this the same guy who decided to delete that great scene in EP III of Yoda
arriving at Degobah - he said "it didn't belong" ???? WTF??
