English registered rental cars

I use one of the big rental companies in Dublin airport regularly enough, today I was given a English (NI) reg merc. I also noticed that there were other English registered cars in the car park. I was just wondering as this is the first time I've noticed this, whats the story with VRT and insurance on these cars.

There is specific provision for this, they can rent them once or twice before sending them back. They may hope to find someone doing an open jaw in the opposite direction.
    English (NI) reg merc

A NI reg is as Irish as one from any other part of Ireland, it certainly isn't English.

I thought that there was no provision for this at all, to rent the car in the south, it had to be a southern regg'd car.....

That sounds seriously dodgy to me. Would have thought it was possible if doing a 1 day 1 way back to the North, but a rent and return in the Republic in an NI car.......

Most of the time the UK reg cars at Eastlands are awaiting return back there. Must see if I can get myself a free weekend in the UK by taking one back - surely they must have some ROI cars in England to come back.

Unless it was the crowd in Yellow and Black then I'd doubt that the car is even owned by the rental company that rented it to you.

Revenue & Customs may choose to disagree with you on that...

Revenue & Customs have no capability to establish Irishness, their only brief is to establish whether you comply with the law in the Republic, or not.

    from revenue.ie

If a hired Category A vehicle has been brought into the State by a non-resident under a hire contract which expired in the State, then the car-hire firm is allowed to re-hire it once to another non-resident in order to remove it from the State.

However, they have made other arrangements with the Revenue beyond the minimum.

That loop hole is all but closed at this stage. They shouldnt be hiring a foreign reg here.

Lads, VRT is not paid on certain rental cars, I think if it is long term. I think.

In saying that, I wouldnt be chancing driving around in a UK reg Merc. Its asking from trouble, and the rental company should know better.
