The bould Kev gets 4 weeks. The AB's say they will 'fight to the death' to get this overturned, due to his exemplary discipline record and the fact that he made contact with his shoulder and not his head.

In NZ they obviously never heard of YOUTUBE (kevin mealamu headbutt) and in Ireland we will never forget the SPEAR tackle on BOD.

I think they have got so used to bullying the IRB they just forget the general rugby supporters.

All Black hooker Kevin Mealamu is pleading innocence despite being banned for four weeks for a headbutt on the prone Lewis Moody in last week's New Zealand-England test.

“I’ve played more than 100 Super games and 82 tests and never had any foul play against me. I do take it personally. I’m not that sort of person," he is reported to have bleated.

Is this the same Kevin Mealamu who was cited along with his then captain Tana Umaga for the double spear tackle on Brian O'Driscoll which left the then Lions captain with a dislocated shoulder and almost a season-long break from the game? Why, yes it is.

He got away with that one; he didn't this time. Or at least, he hasn't so far. That's disciplinary hearings for you: swings and roundabouts.

As somebody said five years ago "Don't be a sook, mate"

Wasn't he also having a root around in Simon Shaw's mouth which led to the biting incident on the same 2005 Tour?

I know Shaw has a long disciplinary record but I remember a few newspaper reports were questioning this then also.

    Shaw? Shawly not.

    Grewcock, I think you'll find.

Was it? Shaw was stuck in my head for some reason!

Hard to know who's worse Shaw or Grewcock, my money is on Big Danny!

grewcock's in a different league when it comes to thuggery.

delighted to see Mealamu finally facing a ban, his holier than thou attitude is comical when some of his 'priors' are considered.

I thought the funniest comment of the day was Richie McCaw complaining about the inconsistency of refereeing :)

When i saw this during the game on saturday I thought he would definitely get cited for this... It was a dirty headbutt and it was definitely on purpose. In all fairness he should get 8 weeks!

    Take your oil Mealamu!

he is 100 percent correct though.refereeing has been poor

Not relevant to this thread though.

Be honest NZ have no case here and trying to appeal it on the grounds of his previous and their own Mana in the global game smacks of sour grapes.

i reckon he suffers from narcalepsy and all the referee's are aware of this, this is why they dont mind when he spends half a game lying prone over the ball

    Here we go again...

Dylan Hartley's elbow on McCaw has been overlooked... very convenient.

We want to bring up old discretions then don't forget Jamie Heaslip's legendary knee job on the All Black captain as well. Never cried about by kiwi supporters...
On with the game and stop your Northern Hemisphere bleating... maaaa!

what is the relevance of Heaslip here? he was red carded and banned, no complaints from anyone.

mealamu has been found guilty and banned and hes the one thats bleating that hes whiter then white.

hi kevin heres a video clip of you headbutting moody. oh you say that you didnt do it? ok thats ok then no ban. sorry kevin thats not the way it works. the panel should increase the ban if he appeals it for wasting their time.

The ban has been reduced to 2 weeks from 4 weeks according to BBC

    Shockingly poor decision.

Shows the might of the NZRU when it comes to rugby politics.

Very poor outcome. 4 weeks was lenient.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,375 ✭✭✭padser

Actually not too bothered with the ban being reduced, was more concerned the ban might be overturned.

Reason being when a player has never been successfully cited (and it been upheld against him) he can legitimately argue to have a 'record of previous good behaviour' even when, (for example in this case) he may have previous citations not upheld for things like spear tackling.

Having a ban against him at least now means he wouldn't have subsequent opportunities to argue he is a role model citizen

(That said clearly I would prefer to the ban to be upheld)

This reduction is shocking and proves to me that the star attraction of world rugby does indeed call the tune.

Mr Mealamu and his good pals, Umaga and Soialo, have been on the very edge all through their careers But that edge obviously has a safety net now and in the past, and that is the might of NZ in the boardroom of rugby rulers.

This 'stain' on his record is deserved, not for anythimg in the past, but for this incident which was BLATANT. He can hang his head in shame for that act of thuggery and the IRB have just supervised a shameful sham.

    Shocked at the reduction.

Just saw this incident again - the intent is not even questionable. It's a complete disgrace that he was only given a 4 week ban! To have it reduced to 2 weeks is ridiculous.

The 'I'm not that sort of guy' crap is ridiculous too.

Another example of bowing to the All Black brand - 'We sell the most jerseys, so don't **** with us'

How can grabbing Moody shoving him down and diving into the back of his head with your forehead not count as intentional headbutting? I dunno, it's shame s*it that they overturned the ban probably should of been even longer than the 4 weeks!

Is there any real difference between that and deliberately stamping on Moody's head?

I'm sure stamping hurts less for the aggressor.

I had a look around a few NZ rugby forums and they all seemed to be ok with it. Do the crime, take the time.

Interestingly it a few highlighted how he was probably the most responsible for the O'Driscoll thing.....

Anyway, away from that can of worms, I'm not at all shocked.
Frankly I would be more shocked at the "shockedness" of people posting on here except I'm used to that.

Bar the two incidents, he has usually been a fair and certainly not dirty player any time I have seen him.
Its likely that players with good records will get reductions on appeal.

    Shocked at the reduction.
im shocked at the reduction too.but i was also shocked when heaslip didnt get 6 months to a year. dupuy and the other stade guy attoub got huge bans for gouging and i thought heaslip would get something similar for his knee.

these decisions are always going to be hugely contentious depending on your view point. when they get banned it wasnt for long enough.when they dont get banned its a disgrace eg hartley.when the player getting banned is one of yours the ban is too severe.

6 months plus? Are you serious? A gouge can and has blinded players. A punch can do just as much damage as a knee can. The ban was served and he learned his lesson. No need to bring it up over and over again. McCaw certainly had it coming for the amount of times he's been practising the "dark arts" in rucks.
