Does anyone know if it's possible to convert mkv to mp4 & still retain surround sound ?

I've tried both iflicks & asoft media converter & while both do a great job on the picture, the surround sound is lost.

I'm having trouble playing MKVs on my appleTV (stuttering) & it's driving me nuts.

I use a programme called gotsent for converting mkv files to mp4 so i can watch them on my PS3. Pretty sure it retains the surround sound but dont hold me to that one. Give it a go.

I'm not sure if it retains the 5.1 audio because I explicitly need to convert it (I convert my MKVs to MP4 with stereo AAC and they are then playable on the iPad with no real conversion - a 45 minute video takes 2-3 minutes to complete) but I use this on Mac OS X:

The features list seems to indicate it can do 5.1 AAC and if I remember correctly, it has an AppleTV profile but I've only used the iPad profile...

Just found out that M4V file retains surround sound & is also iphone/ipad compatible. Interesting...
