Not sure if this is in the right forum mod's, but thought it would be of most interest to Bargain Alerters, feel free to move.

Just to let people know that as of December Tesco is changing the exchange rate for their "Clubcard deals" From December the 6th you will only get 3 times the value as opposed to 4 times

    http://www.tesco.com/clubcard/importantchanges/

This is hidden in the Uk site but customer care has confirmed that it will be changing in Ireland too. Mrs Redspot was tipped off when booking an Irish Ferries deal, and did a bit of digging. No mention of it on the Irish site yet.

sh!t deal for Irish customers if true - as that link states UK customers are getting double-points on their shopping to compensate - we however are not.

I asked them about this last month and they said it was applying to the UK only and there were no plans to bring it in here.

would be very interested to get a confirmed answer to this question.

I am not surprised at all.
the deals are never really appealing and you get to avail of the full price on everything which when using your deals vouchers you are paying more as there is nearly always a special offer run by the group which will work out cheaper anyway
I sent Tesco back my last Voucher deal tokens for a hotel group i wanted to use, i had waited right up to a week before they expired and i could not get a good rate, points refunded.
Waste of time, anyone happy with there deals they got other than magazine subscriptions?
And with the tv ad on now the savings on vouchers if you use them in store are really enticing yet UK only, whats their problem?
Do we not spend enough in Tesco Ireland to qualify

I've used them in Leisureplex, the zoo, Cineworld and Select Hotels and fair enough as you can't avail of other offers but for me its worked out about half price compared to an offer price. If they change the ratio to 3:1, it will less appealing. It will still work out better to use them.

I just wish they would bring back the 50% back on clubcard they used to have. It takes ages to get enough points these days to avail of the tokens.

I very rarely shop in Tesco but I got the credit card and buy nearly everything with it, so the points add up (slowly). Up until now we've used it for Dublin Zoo quite a bit.

yes - I've used them for the Zoo, Zoom Adventure Play, Insomnia, Milanos, Wicklow Gaol - all of them good deals.

If you use them for travel-related deals like hotels or ferries you get charged the rack rate and can't avail of any discounts available, so there is a trade-off there and you have to make your own call on whether it is worth using the vouchers. Having said that we paid for our entire ferry fare with deals vouchers this year, can't complain about that at all...

Tesco never reveal their Irish profits but we are rumored to make them some of their largest profits. There's just less competition in that sector here for us to turn our backs on tesco regardless of what they do and they know it...we are perfectly placed to be screwed by them and we are:(.

I have used them for the zoo before and it made it a cheap trip.

Can anyone tell me if I apply now for zoo vouchers, how long these will be valid for once I receive them?

Thanks The Rigger. Traditionally they dont release Irish profits so thats quite interesting.
RETAIL GIANT Tesco makes greater profits in Ireland than in any other part of its global empire apart from South Korea, according to a new report.

Tesco Ireland’s profit margin will rise in the current financial year to over 7 per cent, despite the economic downturn and the slump in the grocery trade, the report by UK stockbroker Shore Capital forecasts.

I think we are spending enough there alright!

I used them for a trip to France with Irish Ferries in Sept.
Had €85 (340 after 4x deal) so trip only cost 150 or so including cabins. It produced the right result for them too - if I didn't have that deal I would have used Celtic Ferries - much cheaper.

(oddly - my tokens came marked for some restaurant in Dublin! But they told me just to bung 'em in to Irish Ferries - and there was no problem.)

I don't shop enough in Tesco to build up much (apart from Boards.ie bargains!) but as it happened I bought my diesel there for a year and that adds up.

There may be another reason - there were some well-organised people on a UK forum who took great advantage of the 4x deals at times. For instance at one stage Tesco offered 100 points with some shampoo or something that cost £1 - so one person bought a couple of hundred bottles - and with the 4x deal had enough points to pay for her Open University course. I guess she had very clean hair too.....

Thats pretty clever! Its up to tesco not to do things like that, rather then punish everyone thats uses them

If it's true it's terrible news.
I'm a fan of the Clubcard offers but they could do with getting some new ones on board.
UK have had Double Clubcard Points for months and Tesco announced last month they were changing it to 3X the value but keeping the Double points.
If they cut Ireland to 3X, they had better be doing Double Points.

reminded me of this story from a couple years ago - Tesco have become a lot less generous with their bonus points since.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 706 ✭✭✭whatsupdoc?

Very easy for Tesco to stop the abuse.
They could just limit the number of bonus points to one bonus per item per week per customer.
That would avoid all the bulk buying and they could still do all the offers.

I sent them an email about this and got a response.
    It's not happening in Ireland.
If it does, customers will get advance notice and it will be on their website.

We received an e-mail from Tesco with info about our points, and it clearly states that they're not going to be changing the ratio. The person in customer services who informed my wife was obviously mistaken.

    Apologies all.
