New stereo housing is loose

    Hi Guys,

I bought an aftermarket car stereo to replace the code-locked tape player in my '97 Corsa. The housing that came with it doesn't quite sit tight in the dashboard and it rattles a bit - is there any "universal" housing, I could get?

I was thinking I could possibly use some silicon as a thin layer of padding to secure it either? Or even just some folder up paper might do the job? I'd prefer like a more solid solution if one exists though!

    Any advice is most welcome!

There should be a hole down the end of the housing for a threaded bolt to go through, that bolts into a metal strip behind the dash securing it.

Is it one of these you are working with?

    - Usually they have partially cut out flaps that you jam into the recessed space by pushing them out with a screwdriver.

Basically do whatever you need to to to anchor it into the space without leaving anything in the path of the Stereo itself sliding in and out as needed.

Anytime I've seen this was when there was a long threaded bolt that was affixed to the back of the Stereo itself that you then used to secure it in place.

    - I had thought it was a retro thing though?

The original housing had a bolt like this, but the new stereo doesn't fit that housing. The new stereo came with a mecano style strip of metal with holes in it that I can use to attach the back of it to the dash.

Yep - it looks just like that, but it's about 1-2mm out on all sides. I imagine your suggestion for pushing the flaps out at the side will secure it.

That's a good idea, will try that so.

Edit: just in case I didn't make it clear in my op, the stereo fits the housing fine, but the housing doesn't really fit the dash properly.

You'll be fine - Do what ya have to do so that when the Stereo is in nothing moves or rattles - Once the Black Plastic trim is clipped on the gap or whatever shíte you have to pack in there to secure it will not be visible.

    - Something like some cardboard secured by a load of Masking Tape wrapped around the Housing cage (without covering expandable tabs) might be an idea?

Wrap the edges in a few layers of insulation tape & then they should fit the gap & make a snug fit whilst eliminating any rattles

Thanks for the advice lads - got this sorted at the weekend.

Used the partially cut flaps and a screwdriver to bend them out. It's not going anywhere. I couldn't find anywhere to use the mecano style bit to mount to the dash, but ended up making wedge out of it to secure the back. It was a bit of a bodge, but it's not moving at all.

Had all sorts of trouble with the aerial connection though - had to buy a connector in halfords, then the original connector broke, so had a great laugh with the 6 inches of aerial wire Opel kindly left me to work with!

Anyways, I now have a CD Player and Radio. Hoorah! Thanks!
