2.dril it to the roof and face east
3.bring the cable from the sat to the decoder box
    4.connect the box to tv
    5.do installation
    .............6.....watch tv

    ???????????????????????????????????????????????????/

if its that easy ill do it tommorrow myself in 10 minutes.......but im guessing its not so could you all please explain why il need to give someone and extra 120 euro to do it for me?............

Even a pro would not do it "in 10 minutes". There are plenty of YouTube videos on how to install a dish.

What type of box are you looking at? Most of the stuff in Maplin is cheap rubbish or over priced. Save yourself a load of hassle and source a Freesat branded receiver.

More or less. I wouldn't buy it in Maplin though.
Allow yourself a bit more time, maybe 15 mins, especially if you're including steps 1 and 6 :pac:

Go get the "free view box and sattellite",drill it to your roof and let us know how you get on.

I installed a sky dish on my house on sunday, got up the ladder drilled the holes, put up the dish, looked at my neighbors dish to see the direction it was pointing, pointed mine in that direction. Went inside plugged in a old thompson sky box.

    Info channel played instantly :D.

Checked the signal strength, it was 80% with a quality of 70-80%.

Pure luck i know, but saved me the hassle of getting a satellite finder etc.

As Kbell points out a "freeview" box is useless for satellite.

1.Buy a freeview box + sattelite in maplin for 60 euro

Freeview boxes wont work on a satellite Dish.
Instead of wasting your Money on a cheap budget Free to Air satellite kit For €60. Get an Installer who has all the right Tools and Equipment that supplies Branded Freesat Systems It will Probably take him between 1.5 to 2.5 hours to install and provide a demonstration on the system

2.dril it to the roof and face east

Needs to be mounted poles or on Block walls not Tiles.

3.bring the cable from the sat to the decoder box

You will need roughly 22500 miles of cable

    4.connect the box to tv

What way . Scart, AV, RF or Hdmi

    5.do installation

    Of what.

    6.....watch TV

If you follow the Steps of what you just said you will never be watching satellite TV channels.

What are been sold and installed for €180 is cheap Free To Air satellite system's. It NEEDS RETUNING every time a channel changes Transponder
Most Reputable Installers/Riggers wont Install free to air systems any more

A FreesatSD system installed will set you back €230.

If you are competent at DIY and running cabling - then yes - it is basically that simple.

Getting a fix on the satellite can be tricky though - so allow at least an hour for that after mounting just in case.

And I would also suggest a proper Freesat box - these can be got easily online - you don't need a professional installer to get one.

I installed my own 3 room (quad) system with no real bother with no previous sat experience.

180 Euro is reasonable especially if the work is done by a reputable professional. Bear in mind there are insurance cost, cost of travel, equipment costs (the right equipment and proper grade cables) to name but a few of the cost for small such privates companies who work within peoples households.

Some people are handy enough and can install their own Satellites systems, service their own cars and save money, but most people are pretty useless when it comes to theses sort of things. The amount of threads started by people here by people who bought Aldi, Lidl and B&Q systems and could not get them working is huge.

The Pro's are worth the money IMO ( I'm not a pro btw)

Pay the extra to someone who knows exactly what they are doing with the right FREESAT reciever, plus the knowledge to do it right.
As any long term good installer in this business will tell you, you get what you pay for, Simple!
Do You think we Installers get free diesel, van tax, insurance etc etc???

Watty is a genius and a gentleman and has a great tutorial on how to align a satellite dish and much more tv related info at www.technir.ie Lyngsat, Flysat, Astra2D.com and Freesat.co.uk are also great sites. Buy a Humax Foxsat Freesat HD harddisk pvr which has a full weeks tv guide for the epg and find out how to add in the other channels that only have now and next epg, there are over 160 more so over 300 channels so far at the moment. STV HD, ITV1HD, BBC HD, BBC ONE HD, Luxury Life HD are all free to air and in the clear. Two more Astra satellites are due to go in to orbit between 2012 and 2014 so I am sure that there will be a lot more HD and SD channels then. Try Amazon.com, Ebay and Pixmania to compare prices and shipping costs. Alignment of the sat dish has to be precise in both the vertical and horizontal and the skew has to be turned and adjusted tightly in order to get the optimum signal strenght to prevent picture breakup in heavy rain and windy conditions. Buy an 80cm dish incase you would like to add in Saorsat at 9 degrees East next April if it has a successful launch. Are you also aware of Saorview? You probably are already. The skew on the lnb should be approximately at the Seven O' Clock or x shaped adjustment. Elevation height and precise azimuth varies with each location. You can use the signal quality and signal strenght info of the inbuilt signal meter reading of the sat box connected to a portable tv on a chair outside when adjusting the azimuth and elevation of the dish and also check all the different signal levels of each channel's transponder. I can get 94% signal quality and up to 83-84% signal level and used a Comag Silvercrest SL65's signal meter to align everything. Use a level to make sure that the bracket, wall and dish are level. Try to put your dish ten to twelve feet up on one of the walls clear of any obstructions faching south easterly in direction. Get a compass or look at a neighbours dish and then align the dish very slowly up and down and from left to right, lock the signal, tighten the fittings one at a time slightly before actually aligning, try the skew and again tighten each bolt and screw one at a time slowly until very tight. Wear strong garden gloves to avoid injury incase of a spanner slipping as I lost a thumb nail one time over tightening a nut after taking off a glove and got an agonising blow and was bleeding after it slipped of the thread of the nut which took three months at least to heal. The first and last time that mistake will happen. I had too low of a step ladder and couldn't lower the V bolt on the bracket of the dish down to the level of my hands as I had to avoid a high fence on a ground pole mount and anyway it was a cheap soft Lidl nut fitting so no wonder it slipped off the thread. Avoid Lidl satellite dishes. I wasn't allowed to mount a dish on the Landlord's precious wall. Try to avoid that if you can. You may require three spanners to tighten nuts and bolts in series and a screwdriver also. Best of luck with that and let us all know please how you get on and ask questions if you are having any problems.

thanks to all of you who replied especially freetv {great info thanks}.....i think ill need to learn more about this and hopefully in the future upgrade it myself but i think ill probably just get somone else to do it now.........i dont want to put it in and have these 80mph winds throw it to cork................i reckon ill get the guy who will do it for 180 to install it.....probably near christmas as i need to sort out a upc contract......i just want standard definition box that gets 150+ channels {all bbc,s/utv,s/ch4/e4.....etc

But if any of you install ones in dublin for less than 180 {i know thats pretty cheap} send me a pm with price what you supply and contact info.....i live about half an hour north of dublin city center.

    {note ill only reply if i chose you so please dont pm me asking why i havent got back to you yet if i dont}

I did some research and then bought my gear from Satellite.ie. A few questions that I had on the install were all answered simply and plainly by Tony over the phone and I went on to set up my dish, quad lnb, cabling and Freesat receivers in three rooms with a Humax HD PVR in the sitting room. This took about 2 and a half hours in total with about 45 minutes of that time spent tuning in the dish. All in the above cost me about €530 of which almost half of that was spent on the Humax PVR. However, its paid for itself by now as I have free tv and no monthly SKY bills of €22 - €72.

Finally, if you ask for quotes from people like you did above, it would be nice if you at least took the time to tell people that you're going with someone else for your sat install. Blithley ignoring someone who's taken the time to send you a quote is all too reminiscent of Celtic Tiger "I don't have to say thank you" Ireland.

    hi all

I hope this is ok to piggy back on this thread:

I would be grateful if someone can answer a few questions or give me advice, thanks.

    I'm looking at getting this:

    http://satellite.ie/acatalog/Freesat_DIY_satellite_systems.html

I'm hoping it will be back in stock soon :)

A friend has installed one in his place and will do all the necessary wiring.

Neighbours have similar so I think I can just face dish same direction?

I don't know what LNB is :o but it comes with a single, can i just buy a double LNB thingy ( price???) if I wanted to link to upstairs tv aswell?

I have a Sony Trinitron old TV and am currently just using rabbits ears so have got RTE 1 and 2, TV3 and TG4.

I know something is happening to terrestrial? tv in 2012 and haven't a clue about HD and all that techie stuff. :o

If I buy this box now does it mean I have no TV and the box is useless in 2012?

Think that's all my girly questions :p

Can I please ask if you are answering my post please don't get too techie or I'll be lost.

I have tried researching myself but get a bit frazzled by all the options.

    Thanks a million :)

Exactly the same direction. You're sure you have a clear view of the sky to the South/South East, where you intend to put the dish?

Yes, dual or quad LNBs for seperate rooms. Don't forget you'll need more cable also, oh, and a second receiver...check out the link below for a good price on a multiroom kit. [Edit: multiroom package isn't HD]

It's happening already (Digital Terrestrial), but the box you're looking at is a different system (Digital Satellite), it only receives the UK channels, and can't receive RTE etc.

If you want to future-proof yourself, get a HD receiver, which will work with all the current UK stations, and any new HD channels which may come along.
There's also the possibility that RTE will be available on satellite next year (if you have a HD receiver), using a second small dish.

Either way, the rabbits ear solution will work til the end of 2012, and any new telly you may have to buy should receive Digital Terrestrial (they're calling it Saorview), and any satellite system you buy will work well beyond 2012, barring catastophic solar flares:D
