A few reasons off the top of my head.

LPG is not very well available in Ireland and was alot more popular a few years ago (1970's & 1980's).

LPG is not as cheap as it should be, costing around €1/litre, as it is a niche fuel and the few retailers really know how to charge for it.

Cars have to be converted, this must be done properly to stringent safety regulations and is expensive.

LPG delivers about 20 to 25% less fuel economy than ordinary petrol which makes the real life cost about €1.25/litre when you add in the lower efficiency. Petrol is about €1.35

LPG is also made from Oil (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) and if we were to adopt a system to run cars on say CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) or better still Biogas (Methane) it would make better sense as we have lots of Natural Gas and Methane can be derived from waste byproducts such as decaying organic matter or simple sewerage works.

A)it doesn't come as part of standard paddy spec
    B)it's not (teediddlytastic) daysul
C)Does it work best on "fierce big injuns"? (ie over 1.4 ;) )

    Well put Langdang :D

I was looking to convert my 101 (3.5l V8) to run on LPG before I moved here but didn't bother because the £1000 cost of a kit buys a lot of petrol, LPG is too dear here and hard to find.

LPG in the UK is half the price of petrol and with a big engine the power loss is only 10% so a lot of V8 powered LRs run purely on it. A modern efi V8 with a good kit hardly notices the power loss.

The Irish thing about it must be diesel is understandable I suppose but I get fed up with being asked at shows why I don't put a diesel in the 101  I love my V8!!

A generation ago people really liked LPG here. Then the government start taxing it as a standard fuel (it has tax breaks elsewhere) and destroyed the industry (completely).

"Irish people" dont have a problem with LPG, the Irish Government does.

Im still considering getting a cheap V8 converted, doing a lot of miles it would work out cheaper than petrol (but nowhere near diesel).

LPG used to be taxed much lower than petrol but that was changed about 10 years ago or so, and since then, it just doesn't make financial sense any more. There is still a large tax advantage in favour of LPG in the UK.

The Generation 3 systems (ECU Piggyback) deliver 80 - 90 % efficiency compared to benzine.

Conversion here in the Netherlands runs at around 750 - 1200 euros for a 6 pot.

You have to drive the car for 20,000km before the LPG Conversion pays off.

LPG in Ireland isn't really popular due to the lack of stations.

LPG is a total balls in the winter, try filling your car when its -17, bloody nozzle keeps freezing up.

Connectors are different across the EU, one for Ireland, Different one from Germany so you need to carry a few depending on where you go.

CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) is taking off now in Germany, their selling cars from the factory which are CNG only, most taxis in NRW now run on CNG.

It's not that people don't like LPG here - it's that people (everywhere) like what's cheap :D

Over here LPG is expensive because of unfavourable fiscal treatment. In the Netherlands however, LPG has very low excise duty compared to both petrol and diesel, hence it is (and has been) very popular for about 40 years now

Friend over there converted his 3l V6 petrol sports car to LPG and earned back the cost of the conversion within one year (25k km). That said the motor tax for an LPG car is a lot more expensive than for a petrol car of the same weight over there.

The roadtax is usually expensive for LPG becuase your usually fitting LPG to a big car, the addition of LPG only adds Road Tax becuase the Tank adds weight, usually pushes you 1 bracket up.

However its only usually around an extra 100ish euros for the year, a Merc S320 is around 1600 a year to tax (Motorrijtuigenbelasting) without LPG and 1726 a year to tax with an LPG Conversion :) Sooooo worth it though ..

“And my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, generates funds to the exchequer. You don't want to acknowledge that as truth because, deep down in places you don't talk about at the Green Party, you want me on that road, you need me on that road. We use words like freedom, enjoyment, sport and community. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent instilling those values in our families and loved ones. You use them as a punch line. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the tax revenue and the very freedom to spend it that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said "thank you" and went on your way. Otherwise I suggest you pick up a bus pass and get the ********* ********* off the road”
