Changes to Dublin Bus Route 123/130

I am amazed the 123 hasn't suffered much of a cut. It was originally planned to be.

To be honest I'm pretty shocked too, I thought they could have scaled it back even more to about 12 mins, as the main problem on that route from knowing someone that gets it is overcrowding and people having to wait for the next bus because the single decker before it is full. The extra double decks should deal with that quite a lot.

123 cuts ain't bad, every ten minutes on the hour is handy.

Though once again we're mostly seeing cuts to off-peak and Sunday services. I get the bus at night a lot of the time but at least for the former it will be running every 20 minutes and not every half-hour like on some other routes.

Whilst route 123 seems to have been cut in frequency, a lot of the single decks I notice are in the process of being retired and replaced by double deckers, so whilst the 8 minute frequency is now 10 minutes, I think it's rather sensible as with buses that hold twice as many people.

That's not necessarily a good thing for passengers - they won't care if the total capacity is the same - just that their bus is now less frequent. Of course, if there were persistent occurrences of people being left behind, moving from single to double is a good thing but changing the frequency is unrelated. And then there's the issue of double deckers being slower than single deckers so their journey time will increase.

You obviously aren't familiar with the 123. Double deckers have been asked for for years now. The bus regularly fills up after the first few stops. A minor frequency cut will be practically welcomed to ensure a 100% double deck operation.

I'm not commenting specifically on the 123 - just pointing out that replacing SDs with DDs and cutting the frequency is not the good thing that a previous poster seemed to be suggesting. In limited circumstances it can be good but only if you accept that your journey time will increase.

At least you'll be sitting and not standing for that longer journey ;)

I noticed the increased number of EVs and VGs working the 123 lately, was also on WV36 over the weekend and noticed the RTPI display had been removed. Probably not long left for the single decks now, or are they gone already?

They should be fully withdrawn by Saturday. It should leave about six single decks left in the fleet.

Have Summerhill got EV,s now, or are the EV,s on the 123 from Harristown?

I'm not sure, the ones I saw were normally Harristown based but whether they've been transferred or not I don't know.

The EVs have transferred from Harristown to replace the withdrawn WVs at Summerhill.

Urgh I hate those "every 10 minutes until X" on timetables, it completely strips away any "glance and go" convenience of the timetable. To that end, I've reformatted it for my use, and am sharing it here for those who want it (southbound only, northbound doesn't concern me)

Looks like all the single decks are gone. Personally find the 123 is running a lot smoother now with all the extra room!

Even worse are those "about every ten minutes until X". Seriously, putting "about" in a timetable is completely ridiculous. The 140 has it, as do a few others I've noticed but can't remember.

There was one timetable once before that had "About every 8-10 minutes" which really did win first prize for being vague, with a range of times AND the word about.

That is standard actually on London bus timetables these days.

It was also what was recommended by Deloitte.

the word "about" has no place on any timetable, ever.

I don't particularly like having the term "every x to y minutes" or "About every x minutes" on timetables but to have both if you ask me is ridiculous.

It just basically defends the company when there are gaps in service who will they turn around and say, yeah it's 17 minutes since the last bus, but it doesn't say every 10 minutes, it says's about every 10 minutes

Does about feature on the timetable? I'd say that was an error if it does.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,316 ✭✭✭KC61

Personally I would prefer to see the whole timetable or the minutes past each hour if they are consistent.

Yeah, a few of them do, the 140 says about every 10 minutes, I could havw sworn some timetables said about x-y minutes at one point but can't find one.

I'd say that'll be removed when the timetable is changed shortly. "About" doesn't feature on any of the timetable post Network Direct.

How do you know this? do you work for Dublin Bus?

Look at any of the new timetables that have been put up under the Network Direct project - the word "about" isn't in any of them.

There was a no-show bus on the 123 route this morning, as a result the following bus was jammers... looks like the single decker days are not fully behind us.

Hope this "bus every x minutes" thing won't be used as an excuse to skip departures!

I'm 99.99999999999999999999% certain I saw EV22 on the 123 this afternoon. Clontarf helping out?

The route was originally meant to move to C/Tarf.
