I've got a htpc and two laptops all running ubuntu 9.1. I would looooove to be able to access my music that I have on my htpc from my two laptops but I just havent been able to figure it out. all the instructional videos on you tube are bout samba which seems to be used for sharing with windows. this all looks fairly simple but i can find anything that tells me how to share amongst ubuntu machines. this is driving me friggin nuts.

i think i had a thread here a few months back about this (or maybe I hijacked one) anyway i cant find it either way so apologies to anyone that may have already tried to explain this to me.

I'd give me eye teeth at this stage for an idiots guide video on you tube or something.....this cant be that hard to do is it? my linux use is moderate. I'm using it exclusively at home for a year or two now. I poke around a fair bit installing and tweaking things but I still struggle with some basic elements...obviously.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

I use NFS for sharing amongst the Linux PCs ...... don't use Bunty so cannot help with setup instructions ..... surely there must be some simple instructions on their forum ......

    EDIT
First hit on google ... sure is long but I guess it works .....

FWIW I use the fish protocol to share directories between machines. This requires SSH being set up on each machine but this is very easy to do.

Samba isn't just for sharing files to windows clients. Set up your samba share on the server, and then on the client, just mount the share as follows:

    mount -t cifs -o username=sambausername,password=sambapassword //serverip/sharename /mnt/point

And stick that into your fstab and it will remount on boot time.

Same here, plus if you are a KDE user it has the nice advantage that it's supported natively by kioslave which means the likes of Konqueror, Kate and Amarok all have inbuilt support by default.

    As does GVFS. :)

Just looking up this myself, decided to go with NFS as people reported it's much faster than Samba (how true I don't know)

Try https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SettingUpNFSHowTo for full details or

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=249889 for a much shortened version

to me this one looked easiest (cheers pickarooney)
    http://my.opera.com/ubuntunerd1/blog/share-files-between-two-ubuntu-computers-via-ssh

and its worked well so far from me, worked well as in I can access shared folder and all that so I'm chuffed with that much. next step is getting amarok or rythmbox to use that folder for its content source

thanks for all the help folks..I'll probably be back again when I run into trouble!

    evenin folks

I've been using ssh as per above and I'm pretty chuffed with it. the only problm I have is that if I try to add my media library from the server box I cant choose it. It's like selecting a folder on a mapped drive is not possible maybe?

I tend to use amarok but would be willing to jump ship if it was easier to do in some other program.

anyone know a way of doing this?

    thanks

Have you tried mounting the remote drive on the server by adding something like this to /etc/fstab ?

    sshfs#user@host:directory mountpoint fuse user 0 0

    or

    //remote/share /local/mount smbfs username=youruser,password=yourpass 0 0
