Refund for Motor Tax question

Was in a car crash just under 2 weeks ago - October 28th to be precise. My car (2001 1.0L VW Polo worth 1.5K approx) was a write-off and was towed away to a local yard... and obviously has been off the road since.

I bought another car (2003 1.2L VW Polo.. yeah, I'm a sucker for VW) from a dealer (the same dealer that towed my VW Polo to their yard). They told me they'll be giving my crashed Polo to the dismantlers.

So the tax on my new car is up in either next month (December) or January 2011.. but I still have valid tax on my crashed Polo up until April so I'm setting about getting a refund for that. It won't be much

I have the form to return for the refund.. but is my reason for refund that '2. Vehicle Scrapped / Destroyed' and if that's the case, do I need an End-Of-Life certificate? Have seen it mentioned elsewhere.

    Many thanks in advance.

Its looks as if you do according to this, however details like are enforced differently by each councils Motor taxation division and your best bet for clarity would be to give your local motor taxation office a ring in the morning.

Sorry to hear about the crash, no injuries I hope :)

    Cheers Stinicker.

Someone told me that they got a letter from the Gardai stating that the car was off the road for a certain number of weeks, and this was sufficient. I doubt it though!

    No injuries thankfully!

I got that form signed, saying my car was off the road for a few months last year (at my local garda station). And I was exempt from paying what would have been due in car tax.

I found it interesting that the Garda just took my word for it (I was telling the truth btw - that car was off the road for almost 4 months) - I didn't need to provide any proof - it was my first time to get this form and I had all sorts of paperwork with me!

Anyway, as my arrears were ignored, I imagine your situation is similar and your tax should be reimbursed. But check your local motor tax office.

Yeah, i've heard similar stories Fittle.

I have the name and number of the Garda who came out the day of my crash and witnessed my "shell" of a car, so it shouldn't be a problem in that respect (to get it signed).

But the problem is with the 'End Of Life Certificate' (if it's needed) is that the car dealership is sending the car for scrappage themselves and I got the impression that they don't do it regularly - they wait to built up a few cars for scrappage, rather than one at a time.. makes sense obviously. So I don't know about this certificate or when I'll get it, or could I request something from the dealership.

You won't need the end of life cert to get the tax money back. I have done it myself and only the garda declaration was needed.

    Ta Haddockman.

Last question - should I declare the car as being scrapped / destroyed on the form above? If so, what date should I use.. date of the crash?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,473 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Yep, just say it has been destroyed and use the date of the crash.

Yeah.. that'd probably be better as it would be the previous calender month, so if they round it up from November - April, that's a better refund that rounding up from December - April.

Oh noe! They only count from the next calender month from the month they receive the application, so if you sent it off today the refund would only date from the start of December. They are clever sods.

Yeah, I noticed that on top of the form when I started filling it out! :(

Ah well.. any refund is better than none!
