    hey there,

so i had been ummming and awwing about buying a new golf for next year and decided feck it i'd go for it over the weekend... went to two volkswagen main dealers today/ yesterday with a view to getting price for a comfortline model and what id get for my trade in... and they both refused to give any pricing ... said they are waiting til the budget to finalise their prices and wouldnt take any order until then... so has anyone else come up against this. i mean if im buying new, i want the thing in january to get my money's worth , but sure december will mean a wait til end of feb/ early march realistically... i know this budget is dreaded and all but i had been told back in october when i was test driving one that a meeting was to be held last week for volkswagen ireland to decide pricing for next year... seems nothing came of it...

it seems mad, they are turning you away when you want to buy now

Some dealers are like this op. Try a few more.

I'm sure if you gave them a deposit subject to any changes in the budget, they'd think about it, but put yourself in their shoes. VRT could get a radical upheaval in the budget, which as we've seen in the past not only screwed up new prices, but decimated second hand prices too.

It's well known the Government aren't chuffed with the low tax some cars are paying, 104 Euro, 156 Euro, not to mention 14% VRT for some cars which would previously have been much higher. There is talk that the bands for VRT and Tax could be widened, which could make a new car more expensive, and more expensive to tax - which would mean that the car is then less desirable on the Irish market. Or it could swing the other way, the type of car you want to trade in could suddenly plummet in value.

From the garages point of view, the worst case scenario is that they give you (x) for your car, the new car costs (y) and charge you (y-x) to change. Suddenly, after the budget potentially goes mental on another rape the motorist crusade masquerading as a green issue, they give you (x-5) for your car, the new car costs (y+7) and your cost to change is suddently (y-x +12k more). If you were a garage selling cars today, would you be willing to give a price with all that uncertainty ahead?

Having said that, someone out there will want your money. Pick up the phone and ask around.

I have a new car ordered for the new year. Deposit taken and cost of change agreed. I deffo would shop around. I dont think there will be big changes in VRT for Jan. Road tax i would think will deffo be looked at. They may bring 104 to 156 and 156 upto 302 and prob increase them too so say the lowest road tax will be like 170.

The other issue here is that VW Ireland are in the middle of confirming pricing.

Its simply down to the fact that they cant supply the cars there has ben a over demand on all the VAG group cars due to the scrappage scheme ,eg Skoda ireland told the factory in noverber 09 they wanted 2500 cars for the 2010 sales year then in late December the scrappage scheme was announced Skoda wasnt prepared for this and there has been huge waiting list so much that there has been over 5,500units sold this year thats more then double the allocated amount i presume that Vw are in the same boat

Like DB said VW have'nt confirmed the prices with dealers yet.

Im sure your would'nt to to happy doing a deal now and then find out the cars price drops by €3000 and being stuck at your original deal. Same goes for the dealer. The only reason he ain't pricing you because he can't, not because he doesn't want to.
