Solution to musicians pay

Its just a suggestion but what seems to be required here is some form of grading system with a corresponding pay rate. For instance a group of perhaps 6 well known and respected musicians would volunteer to grade any band who wished to apply for one and then they would charge accordingly. The better the band the more they get paid. Any band could re-apply for another grading when they felt they had improved. Also any venue or wedding party looking to hire a band could check the bands grading and know their getting value for money. The only people who might have a problem with it are those who aren't much good anyway. The tricky bit is finding the right people to do the grading and you would have to have a small fee to cover their travelling costs but otherwise it seems pretty fair to me.

It's an unnecessary and restrictive "system" that will only serve to hinder musicians and expression. I could use more colourful words but I decided to refrain from that for a change.

It sounds like one of these "zany" schemes thought up by a civil servant. What department do you work in?

Maybe you should try the comedy circuit but don't give up the day job, you're not a civil servant by any chance because you seem to know a lot about it!

Sounds like a lot of admin work

many venues will still only pay the same price that they pay nowdays. So therefore, the average bands would get much more gigs then the higher payed (better bands) cause the higher payed would not be able to negotiate below there price system. couldn't see it working i'm afraid. plus its a cash business, how can you regulate that??

In theory its a ...."colourful" idea, but unfortunately one thats impossible to realistically judge fairly.

Although fair play to the OP for at least offering up an idea....its more than a lot of others will even do nowadays!! :)

In other words, attempting to control an open market with Govt interference. Would not happen in a million years.

Next up, all Self Employed will be told what they can or can't charge. I'd say the mechanics will love that.

More chance of Villa breaking the top 4 than this happening (sorry Savo, had to do it :) ).

We can offer up all the solutions we want but the only solution is getting your name known on the gigging circuit so the venue owner knows you will bring a decent crowd. If your graded for pay on your music, there is still the problem of a very good band with little or no following, why would a venue owner pay extra for that? All they want are bums in seats and cash in the till, the quality of the bands music isnt their real concern.

Fair points and i'd agree it would be a non-runner, in fact this problem has little or nothing to do with music at all. This is about business and those bands with the best business heads are probably the ones who'll do best. Talent is all well and good but if you can't sell it won't count for much.
