The minor final is the game on before the All Ireland final?

Why in the name of all thats sensible would TV3 bid for this game?
Surely it'll be the height of embarassment for them as they end the transmission at 3.20 as Croke Pk begins to fill for the main event? "Join us after the break for the Corrie omnibus"

I just read that TV3 also have Quarter Final matches for the first time.

Bizarre. Also means it won't be in Irish for the first time in years and years.

It should be in 'as Gaeilge' and Micheal O'Se should be commentator. Wont be the same any other way

+1 Having the Minor final as gaeilge should be retained

I personally can't understand this move either. It doesn't seem to make sense, from a couple of points of view.

Firstly, All-Ireland Day(s) at Croke Park have always been a massive event, with a full afternoon's coverage on RTÉ2, covering the build-up, the associated festivities, the minor match, and culminating in the main event. This will now be lost by spliting the day over two competing channels.

For the minor match - traditionally its been broadcast in Irish. To my recollection TV3 has never broadcast a programme in Irish in twelve years on air. Will the GAA insist the programme is broadcast in Irish? If so, I can't understand why TV3 bought the rights. If not, the Irish langauge lobby will probably be out in force...

What about the build-up to the senior match. Will RTÉ be allowed come on air with the Sunday Game Live while the minor match is still airing over on TV3? If they are, it could take audience away from the minor match, but if not, the build-up to the big game could be very much curtailed. You could be left with less than half-an hour of build-up or so before throw-in.

So lots of issues to be thought about, but it seems like a daft thing to do.

Seems to be less games broadcast on TV next year or is 40 the same as last year? Also fair play to Newstalk for competing with RTE.

I never understood why the minor game got Irish commentary anyway. Can anyone explain that to me?

I'm guessing that TV3 couldn't afford to bid for the senior finals, but got the minor finals as a compensation.

There's a rule that RTE must show a certain quota of games in Irish. They use the quota for minor matches in fear of confusing people who didn't bother to learn the language.

    What a silly rule.

What a brilliant rule, for Junior Cert and Leaving Cert students to practice their "Cluaisthuiscint Skills"!

Will they be at the games or will they be watching a tv with back ground crowd reaction on and doing the comentary that way. At times it appears thats the way they do it with the soccer. Hopefully they will have some one better than Ken Early as a commentator.

Don't believe this is true, have you a link or something?

Whether it is true or not, in today's Irish Times report TV3 have confirmed that there is no requirement for them to air the minor finals in Irish. They are however "looking at it".

Methinks they may do it for the first year, see how small the ratings are, and then not do it in future years (or hand back the rights...). The minor matches only get viewing because they are part of the build-up to the senior match and I can't see them being major attractions for TV3.

Except that the GAA championship takes place during the summer when practicing for the Aural Irish exam is far from most students heads. Plenty of GAA in Irish over on TG4 if that's what they do want.

Well I was kinda joking, but that said I love Irish, it's a part of this country tha can't be taken away, aswell as that I think its a nice tradition that should be kept:D If you don't speak the language there's plenty of GAA in English on Setanta.:)

Btw as you probably guessed I'm fluent in Irish, and not from far west where it would be my first language

I was sure it was till I did a search. Doubt there is a specific rule but I'm sure that the GAA would like some championship matches (whatever level) commentated true Gaeilge. And they are right for wanting such a thing.

Can somebody tell me why its such a problem that minor matches are in turn helping the Irish language?

In fairness I say they will go to the games. Interesting to see who they get. Might have to coax Micheal out of retirement:D:D:D

The GAA is about Irish culture, not just hurling and football, not only do they promote Handball and Rounder (to a small extent) but they also have Scór as well as some great traditions of promoting Irish, such as registering yourself in Irish with your club or on team sheets as well as having the name in Irish on top in the program.

Personally I like having the minor final in Irish, usually the minor match is just left on in the background as part of the build up to the final, I would say that the only people that watch it are people with a connection to the teams involved but it's amazing how quickly you get into the jist of things and pick up words as the game goes on, a bit like watching soccer when on holidays in Spain :)

As we get more and more efficent with our media solutions as well as having technology that is evolving, why they can't have a red button option to have the commentry in whatever language the viewer wants, maybe have the primary in Irish.

Also, the final should be the showcase event of the year, why not let all 4 broadcasters have it and let viewers choose who to watch?

Maybe if they were to come up with a few new ideas they might pull in the viewers. Maybe the viewing figures for the minor games on RTE are down on the senior figures is because of the Irish commentry. Some of the minor games are actually quite good, maybe better than the seniors at times.

GAA is a sport, not some Irish language cheer leader. It's all about business - the vast majority speak English and only a small minority can speak Irish fluently.

Like 'As Gaeilge' it is a part of Irish culture. What language does the All ireland winning captain start the speech in so?

I say lets keep tradition! :)

I never understood why that speech is in Irish as well. Most of the audience can't understand it. There's some traditions that just don't make sense.

True, but a rule of the GAA is to promote and encourage the Irish Language and Culture.

That is actually a really good idea. I dont think RTE use the red button much, if at all?
