a friend of mine gave me his laptop saying the hard drive is dead.he doesnt want to pay to get it repaired, he will get a new one instead.thats fair enough.

what id like to know is if i put a new hard drive into the laptop can i boot it from the cd/dvd drive with the os disc and then install the os onto the hard drive from the os disc?
another way of putting it is do i have to get the os onto the new hard drive before i install it to the laptop?by the way i dont care whats on the old hard drive.a fresh install is fine by me.

    cheers

    insert blank hdd

    insert o/s disc

change bios to boot from cd

    install new o/s

its easy and doesnt need a shop to do

if you buy a hdd it may or may not be formatted, if it isnt formatted you need to partition it with software so windows can read it

If it isn't formatted, the installation procedure will take care of that for you...

It really is a simple process, would be a waste of money taking it to a shop!

yea ive installed hard drives to my pc before but i thought with the laptop it might be different.the taking apart of the keyboard to get in one of the memory chips( ive ordered more ram as well) looks a bit awkward but the installation of the hard drive shouldnt be a problem.

    cheers

If the dell is more than 4 years old it may have a 2.5 ide, drive ,you take out 4 screws, 2 per side to remove the old drive from the drive cage.dont lose em.
google ide and sata interface 2.5 inch image search .
SET CD = 0, first drive =cd/dvd drive ,drive o,drive 1 =usb or network drive.drive 2= hardrive .press delete orf2, or other key to acess bios after turning on pc.my del p4 laptop uses ide drives.be very gentle when taking out, install the drive, cage unit, it has to click exactly into place ,2 screws hold the side ,front cage cover in place.put the new drive exactly where the old drive was placed in the hd case, unit..
