Engine size? Quattro or 2WD? Petrol or diesel? Why do you like the Audi over the competition?

Also: buying new is like setting fire to ten grand, BMWs are better, buy an Octavia instead :pac:

Sell your current car privately first then go up north and save that ten grand Zubeneschamali says your setting fire to (which you would save if you get extras up north).

Presuming you want a 2WD 2.0tdi (bestselling one I imagine) that means you have about €36k to play with. That will buy several nice cars.

Is there any tangible reason that you prefer the A4 over its competitors?

    Actually. Better idea.
Go up North and buy a 6 month old demo S4 model if you can find one :D

thanks very much for the advice. i absolutely agree that buying a new car is like setting fire to 10K. i also think that there are of lot of lovely cars i can buy for €36k.

the reason i was asking about the a4 se specifically (and yes it is the 2.0 tdi i was referring to) is because i MIGHT be in a position to get a fairly hefty discount if i buy one which would save me considerable money and negate the need to go up north/buy a demo. it does mean buying an audi and a new one at that.

at the moment i am researching opinion on the car itself so that if i do end up getting the discount i am in a more informed position.

reading my initial thread back i should really have stated this at the beginning so apologies if i have wasted your time.

    thanks again

Does your discount apply ONLY to an SE model ?

Is it on a specific car ?

If you have such a discount available and can add extras I would. Quattor, S line, leather seats, xenons the works

Unexciting to drive - very numb in feedback terms, bit cramped in the back, not very well equipped, but quiet and comfortable, new engines are reasonable - refined units and economical. Nice dash, rest of the car is a little bland. Not spectacularly good value to be honest. If your excellent discount brings it to 30k I'd still consider the competition, although resale from that price would be favourable in the A4!

Any facts to back that up or are you just making up figures again?

Test drive all the competition first before you decide - go in and drive the A4, drive the 3 Series and whatever else is on your shopping list and then make a decision based on what you like.

If and only if then you decide to buy the Audi - make sure to also order the new SE spec and opt for the limited offer S Line upgrade (S Line exterior package and 18" S Line wheels for €750 extra)

SE has been upgraded for 2011 to include Audi Music interface, Concert Radio, Bluetooth and Colour driver information system.

The Se is horribly boring and bland. They are crazy money for such blandness. Buy a Corolla op..:)

Recently drove one (Estate), surprisingly cramped, boot was small, came away very underwhelmed. The plastics inside also seemed a far cry from the previous car. If you are determined to get one just make sure to drive S-line as well as standard suspension cars, the S-line is an acquired taste at best.

+1. Skoda Superb looks more inviting all the time especially the estate.

Harsh words on the Audi. The A4 is a very good car and has great residuals so it's at least a great financial choice especially if you're getting a big discount. New 3 series are an absolute rip off right now. If it's a 2.0 TDI you're getting make sure to at least get the 140bhp.

in fairness to colin and the a4-what else does he buy for 30k-35k bracket if he`s looking for a 4 door diesel saloon?
    passat,mondeo,insignia,laguna-don`t think so.
yes he could buy an 09 5 series or a new octavia and 10k but he is looking for a new motor and an octavia is the better choice if hes looking at a golf but not a A4

The Volvo S60 kicks the ass of the A4 from here to China, and back again and the Superb is much better value for money if you can handle the looks and the badge.

The A4 is the best looking car (IMHO) in the sector, but doesn't represent great value for money based on handling, specification and performance. It will hold it's value better than the other alternatives, and so far they have proven reliable.

If the OP gets a great deal on an MY2011 SE then go for it, otherwise there are better buys around.

Yes, the A4 is probably the prettiest car in its class, especially the avant. However the interior doesn't have the same finish as the previous B7 model, but is still better than the 3 series. If performance isn't a main concern, maybe consider the new IS200d, tax band B, with 3 year warranty.
