Let her drive both and see which one she prefers?

Well speaking for myself, I love my 06 Passat with the DSG box (yes people will come on now saying it's not really an auto but there's no clutch and a gear shifter so... :p). I had an older 02 auto Passat before this too.

Both are very good on diesel - the 2.0 TDI in my current one gives about 1100 km to a full tank, but I do mostly motorway/N-road runs, so that may vary.

Both are comfortable (but go for at least Comfortline/SE spec), have plenty of cabin room and a huge boot.

Although I had no issues with the gearbox itself in the 02 model, there were other issues - door locks, drinking oil (all pretty common).
To be fair though I realised too late that the guy I bought it from was a bit of a cowboy anyway so on reflection it probably wasn't perfect to begin with.

Also my current 06 version does occasionally "hesitate" a bit when cold at low rpm (1400-2000) which is again a well-known thing and opinions differ as to whether it's an unresolved software problem or a quirk (happens in other VAG cars that use the same engine - Audi A4, Skodas etc).

Dual Mass Flywheels are also a known problem on newer diesels generally, and the PD140 engine in my car (05-08) is apparently known for having expensive injector failures.

Generally though they're good cars but if they do go wrong, be prepared for high repair costs :(

    Hi Anan1,

She is driving manual (though not passat) but not comfortable with manual it self..so looking for any automatic and first thought was VW Passat AUTO.

I am getting PASSAT HIGHLINE TDI PD (100) Saloon 1896cc Diesel 2003 Auto for 4600 euros. Car is in good shape (engine+body wise). Can someone please advice if this is good price for 2003 Passat Auto?

    Thank you.
