shock absorber predicament

I brought my car in for a service last week with a free nct check included. Today I end up failing my nct on a leaking shock absorber. Pretty gross oversight by the mechanic, anyone think I should demand this garage to pay for my recheck (€28)?

Also when I went back up to the garage I think they tried to con me into shelling out for 2 shock absorbers in the rear of the car when only the nearside rear is required. They reckon its got to do with imbalances that replacing one will cause. The rearside tested as 46Mm today, what Mm can I expect a new shock absorber to have? Surely I wont go over the 30% imbalance? i.e have a difference of 15 Mm

I think they should pay the 28 euro, but shocks are always changed in pairs I'm afraid.
Sorry missed the FREE part of nct check so add 28 euro to your problems.

He gave you a free Pre-NCT check, told you to replace your shocks, you didn't, you failed the NCT 'cause of the imbalance, and you want him to pay the €28 re-test?

Get both changed, pay your mechanic, pay the re-test fee and lesson learned to listen to your mechanic next time. :p

huh? no, he never diagnosed any problems in the pre nct test. I went to him after I'd failed my nct. You're probably not that bright so my apologies if my post was misleading

OP, if I were you, I'd ask them (the garage) to pay you 28 euros back.
I doubt though, if they will. You'll have a lesson learnt, not to use NCT pre-checks.

And about the shocks - change both.
Changing one might cause too much imbalanbce (over 30%), and even if it won't the second one will soon go, and then you will need to change it anyway.

Shocks, tyres, brake pads, brake discs, etc are things you always change in pairs. It's just for safety.
