Hello. We are Masters students doing Journalism in UL. We will be producing a free newspaper that will be distributed with the Limerick Leader before Christmas. The newspaper is called the Parish Voice and is based around St. Mary's Park.

We have already visited the area and had meetings with the ex-mayor John Gilligan and some workers in the Parish Aid. But what we really need is to talk to other people who live in St. Mary's Park to get a feel for the issues, good and bad, that people feel strongly about.

If you are from or live in St. Mary's Park please contact us. If you could point us in the direction of a potential story or two that would be great, but we would really like to make contact with anyone from the area as it will be very beneficial to get the inside track on the community first hand.

Please contact us through PM or post in this topic. We will PM you our phone numbers and we can take it from there.

    Any help much appreciated.

    Ross and Sean

Why are ye only covering St Mary parks and not all the parishes?
I cant understand why certain areas get alot media attention mainly bad and then the flip side is good spin storys, surely if they didnt get special attention they would be treated as normal

why not simply pick a door, and knock on it? old school journalism skills right there :)

go to the community centre, or go to the school, lots of parents waiting every day to pick up their kids, would be more than happy to chat with you

come on lads, its not hard

Each year the college picks a different area and does a focus paper on that area - Moyross and Southill have both been done. Regenerated areas...

    🤪

    Exactly.

    - To be honest if you guys get a bit of stick on here along the lines of being perpetual Students that could benefit with seeing the actual light of day if you actually stray from your Desks then that criticism would be much deserved.

I have absolutely no idea how or why two Academics from UL would want to publish a Newsletter for an area they know nothing about and seem to be keen to maintain a cautious distance from or who would be bored or clueless enough to encourage them to do it.

It would make more sense for me to publish a Newsletter on advanced Nuclear Fission techniques for the People of Offaly notwithstanding the fact that I am totally unfamiliar with and unrelated to my subject matter and it makes absolutely no sense at all.

Please tell me ye don't receive any public funding for this?

We're knocking on doors in the area, we just thought we might get additional contacts on Boards, perhaps someone we wouldn't meet otherwise.

As prospective Journalists it looks like we will certainly see your names in print soon, one way or another.

Is there need for such hyperbole. The college produced Moyross Voice before and it was considered a success. Hence this would be the next logical step, I doubt it was the two lads who decided. Nobody said you had to read it, either.

The Island field is fine to knock on doors, have had to do it on occasion (serving papers) and people are, unsurprisingly, fine.

Have you contacted the Parish Priest, the President of St. Mary's Rugby Club, or even the Postman?

This is Ross here. You are very quick to jump to conclusions there and make assumptions about people you do not know.

We have as Sean has already outlined, made many inquiries already and have nearly 50 stories from the St. Mary's Park area so far. Your assumption that we have not left the newsroom is completely wrong. As we are not from the St. Mary's Park area ourselves and most of us are not even from Limerick, we have had to come up with as many ways to find contacts as possible and have found a considerable amount so far. The idea to post a thread on boards was suggested as an afterthought and has prompted this thread.

You are suggesting that we have collectively decided to publish a newspaper about an area we picked out of a hat, and that this thread is our only attempt to garner stories. It was a bit naive of you to imply such a thing wasn't it?

Do you really think that after being entrusted with publishing a newspaper, the best we could come up with was to post on Boards.ie?

Part of the Masters course here at UL is to produce a single edition of a free paper on a regeneration area. We do not choose the area.

Furthermore, I do not like being referred to as an academic. I worked in a factory for 6 years after I left school, then worked to put myself through college and started a business whilst pursuing a masters. I am paying for my masters myself too and am not in receipt of a grant.

The fact that you have over 4000 posts on this site leads me to believe that YOU are more likely to be the academic type... sitting there being critical of people and trying to look like you have some level of wit (your reference to advanced Nuclear Fission techniques).

The fact of the matter is that you should not make snide remarks about something without knowing all the details.

If you do have something to contribute then by all means do so.

But if you think you could do a better job at being a journalist, then go and do it and keep your pathetic assumptions to yourself.

    Ross

Fair enough Ross - while I was just teasing, reading back on it I have to agree it was a bit snide, unfair and uncalled for - especially in light of your more than adequate explanation of the Project.

    - I apologise unreservedly and best of luck with it.

Indeed, two editions of the Moyross Voice and one of the Southill Voice have been produced by UL journalism students. They're part of the coursework and they highlight the positive aspects of the various Limerick areas.
