Hi im just abit flustered at the moment with the whole CAO form and all and i was just wondering if anyone could suggest any courses to me?..
so far i know for definite that im putting down:
physical education and biology in DCU, and
    Science (common entry) in Trinity..

im a little bit worried about weither ill get enough points for the course in DCU, but thats my dream course, does anyone know of any similar courses? And im picking the course in Trinity because it lets me combine both biology with geography which i will then go on to do a Hdip is it? so that i can teach.. so i suppose Geography, Science(mainly biology) and PE are what im interested in..

any feedback would be much appreciated! thank you..!

I know very little on the Science/PE/Geo side but I know UL has good teaching degrees in these subjects.

I think there is one with PE, JC Science and either LC Physics or Chemistry.

    Worth a look.

If your plan B is doing an degree with a view to doing the PGDE (new name for the HDip), make sure you check that the degree is on the Teaching Council's list of approved courses here (Trinity is on page 34). Otherwise, you could end up with a degree that is useless for teaching.

I'd second the other poster - the UL teaching courses are excellent. With an integrated course, you come out with your teaching qualification instead of facing extremely stiff competition to get into the PGDE....(followed by even stiffer competition for the practically non-existent jobs:rolleyes:)

Just remember that you can change your CAO choices up until about a week after your Leaving Cert exams. Basically, don't focus too much on having anything concrete for the February(?) deadline, but you should still have an idea. Plus, you'll have an idea of how well your exams went and can make any last minute adjustments :) But please, please research your first choice. I thought "hey, I'll surely like this". Now a first year Computer Science dropout :o Still no idea what to apply for next year

Really important to research the course u want... and if thats your dream course... do everything in ur power to get it.

Sorry to hear about that Healium.. but I agree. What was wrong with Computer Science? I think thats one of the course that people just have a clue what its going to be like until they're actually in it, and by then its too late to change your mind. But u did the right thing getting out now if it just isnt for u. least u have time now to research other possibilities and could even repeat the entire LC if u wanted more points.

I just hated it. The first semester was about 50% maths, which totally put me off it immediately. I was led to believe that the maths content was minimal...

I'm doing the Science Teaching (Biological science with chemistry with concurrent teacher education) course in UL and i'd definitely recommend it! I think its about 450ish. U can also do PE teaching in UL and the PE teachers also choose another subject to teach. There is a list of subject options to choose from. U can't pick biology but u can pick chemistry. This qualifies u to teach JC science and LC chemistry along with PE.

Also if u want to be a teacher i'd recommend doing an education course like this one rather than doing a science degree and then trying to get the teaching diploma because it can be very hard to get. But if u do go about it that way, u cud always go to England then to train as a teacher. if its for science they'll even pay u to do the course cos they have such a shortage of science teachers, but u don't have to stay there and teach u can just come home again. All u have to do to join the irish teaching council is an exam on the history of Irish education.

To do be fair, all of the module info was online, had you checked, you would have known.

Put Health and Performance Science in UCD down, good course that's very similar to PE teaching.

Well I dont think in Computer Science that they specify exactly how much Maths are involved and the difficulty of them either. For the course in UCC anyway, if a student had not taken Higher Level and did well in it, they would be lost in first year CS. Should really be a requirement. Its why CS remains to be the course with the highest drop out rate.
