Michael Lombardi has confirmed that Jerry Jones has pulled the trigger.

It was always going to happen. Jason Garrett will get his chance to show if he can be a head coach now.

Phillips came to the Cowboys at roughly the same time as me. His record has been decent. In 2007 his 13-3 in the regular season was excellent, and only a Patrick Crayton fumble prevented the Cowboys from getting to the Championship game in January 2008. I supported his decision in 2009, after the 9-7 2008 season to let go of Roy Williams Senior, T.O, Tank Johnson, Greg Ellis, Kevin Burnett, and Pacman Jones.

In 2009 he developed players like Tshard Choice, Miles Austin (who never really lived up to his potential), Mike Jenkins, Kevin Ogletree, and Igor Olshansky. Further he managed to adapt players like Keith Brooking into the team. The defeat to the Vikings was an unedifying end to a decent season, when the Cowboys stole the divisional title with a whitewash of Philly, and won their first play-off game since 1996.

It was clear that all wasnt right in the Cowboy's camp when Paddy Crayton started making waves in May. This culminated in his departure to the Chargers. Equally, the decision to release Flozell Adams (an infuriating player) for Alex Barron (a younger version of Flozell) was questionable, while the decision to dove-tail David Buehler as KO specialist and FG kicker backfired terribly.

These bad decision spilled onto the field. First came Romo's needless pass to Tshard Choice against the Skins. This pass was made with nothing left on the clock in the first hald, and it was fumbled by Choice for a Skins TD. If that wasnt bad enough, Barron's foul, leading to the chalking off of Roy William's TD was enough to finish the game. It has all been downhill since then. Mistakes against the Vikings and the Titans cost the Cowboy's dear. The writing was on the wall after the Jags game, and last night's performance confirmed that Phillips was finished.

For me, as far as Wade Phillips is concerned, I will always remember
-His first game against the NYG in September 2007
-The interception of a Brett Favre pass in November 2007 which lead to a Cowboy's TD and win against the Packers
-Staying up till the butt-crack of dawn watching the Cowboys beat the Panthers just before Christmas 2007
-Felix Jones' 96 yard return of a Philly punt in September 2008
-Martellus Bennett's unlikey touchdown to beat the Skins in November 2008 (During a terrible slump)
-The late rally to beat the NYG in December 2008
-The tight wins against Philly and the Skins in November 2009
-The amazing victory of the New Orleans Saints just prior to Christmas 2009
-The shut-outs of Philly and Washington in December/January 2009
-The first P/O win since 1996

There were also times when I was left pulling my hair out
    -The inability to stay disciplined
-Paddy Crayton's fumble against NYG in January 2008
-Phillips decision to stick with Brad Johnson during Romo's injury in 2008
-Romo's decision to hit a "Hail Mary" to Witten against the Steelers in December 2008 when TO was the better option
-Marion Barbers four shut outs on the line against the Chargers in December 2009

The list goes on and on !

However, I salute Phillips. I would also point out that his final draft has yielded a star of the future in Dez Bryant, and Jason Garrett will have something to play with in thefuture. Sadly, this season has been a washout, and for the sake of the Cowboy's reputation, or whatever is left of it, he must go.

That draft was Jerry Jones but Wade had an input...in 09 the draft was disastrous..meant to be for special teams but then the punter situation ...unreal

Being a huge eagles fan I do take delight in the cowgirls implosion. It comes down to players believing their own hype even when they are less talented than espn has them. Wade Philips is a stand up guy and a great defensive coach. Jones AKA the president and GM, is the problem. He drafted these players and traded for the others. The other real victim is Jason Garrett. He turned down two great head coaching jobs, Atlanta and Baltimore, for this opportunity. He will not get a fair chance. After this awful season Jones will get either Cowher or Gruden. Garrett, once very promising, will be damaged goods. Probably a QB coach somewhere else. Go Birds.

Cowher likes too much control...will pass

Gruden is a more political coach .....lay a lot of money on him

As for an Eagles fan ...how many Championship Games is it now winless or winless in the big game itself ? We are having a rest year but when a coach gets his hands on that talent and gets its head right it will be a quick turnaround

Jason Garrett is no victim he is on $3m dollar a year and if he is a coach in waiting now is his chance ...with the schedule 3-5 would be accepted as progress and then rebuild the o -line

Keeping Gruden away from having a say in the draft would actually be a great thing for both parties. He's horrible at drafting.

What's Gruden and the ESPN situation lads ?

It was no surprise to most that Philips has gone, the only thing that may cause some surprise is that its mid season i guess

He never seemed to be able to get the team under control discipline wise etc... and with The Jones' always there it must have been hard to show his authority to the players

Seems like a good guy and a very good defensive coach

The cowboys are nothing but an overhyped gang of egos. They went from superbowl favorites to worst team in the nfl. The bills would run all over them.

He has a three year contract with them afaik.

There is a buyout clause...else there wouldnt be the talk about him (Gruden)

as for the comment about teh Cowboys being all egos ..the team is loaded with talent

    Choice , Jones , barber at H-Back
    Austin, Williams, Bryant at WR
    Witten, M bennett at T-End

add in Gurode , Ratliff, B James , Jenkins

they are underperforming and killing tehmselves with indiscipline and mistakes

the O-Line is large and lumbering ..unsuited to Pass defense and a skill that this team has shown only last season is the total absence of the Run or Run defense ...both strengths under Wade in the past

so i think these can get sorted as a Shanahan type guy would do ...he would stabilise things back to the basics making the team hard to beat

so they arent only egos just classically underperforming all over the field

The cowboys need a strong personality at head coach. They had their best success under strong leaders under jerry jones. Jimmy Johnson stood his ground and the great group they had the last two years was built by parcells. They need someone who wont be a parcels yesman. And to the cat who was drudging up their old glory days, were youreaaly a big boys fan in 1996? Really? Either way Brag all you want about 14 years ago as they are now the biggest punchline in the US. Even Lebron James is calling them out.

Cowboys fan since 1983 actually to the days of Tom Landry

i sense ive picked on an Eagles fan who has to watch the Boys stamp on you a couple of times

or watch Donovan not quite get it done or watch TO do pressups on his front drive

or just nearly get there which is a killer

Atleast they have been an interesting team to watch. They will be a playoff team this year in a time they were rebuilding. The cowboys are a joke. They have had one interesting year in the last decade. What about the year before last when the eagles embarresed the boys.

The Boys were NFC Champs 2 out of three years ...thats not a joke

but i love watching Vick and i think if they can get into the serious end of the playoffs they will take beating ..whoever beats the Giants & Steelers defense will have a SuperBowl...Eagles offence might just do it

Who do you think the right coach for the boys are? Im leaning towards Gruden. Cowher could be a great one too. They definitely need someone to kick their rears. How about the birds? Resign Vick or hand the reins over to Kolb?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 19,986 ✭✭✭✭mikemac

I'd love to see Gruden get the job
He has a big money contract with ESPN but then Jerry Jones can buy it out if he wants him bad enough

I would say Cowher to Chicago or Carolina but realy, that's just a hunch
    Maybe Billick to Carolina?

Kolb to take over at the Eagles, no idea where Vick would go

Gruden's the right one, but Jerry will probably want a yes man.. Norv is his ideal candidate imo but its pretty likely he's going nowhere as SD are turning things around... Garrett could get a shot for a year if the team shows improvement under him.... could be looking at John Fox or somebody like Jim Harbaugh either
