    Just a quick question,
What cars are currently selling in this market right now,I have been watching the relevant car websites and most of the cars are up for a long time before a sale.
Is it wiser to buy from one of these auctions or go the private seller route.
Are people still buying second hand cars and what types are most popular, was looking at changing mine in the new year to an economical diesel nothing fancy around 3000-4500 with low emissions.
    Any info be good

As always, keenly-priced cars of all makes are selling well.;) Buy privately, it's a lot safer and you'll likely pay less.

I agree on buying private. I have purchased a number of work vehicles of late and there is fantastic bargains to be had on good vehicles. A lot of dealers are buying junk in the auction and selling it at astronomical prices.

    cheap fast car - 2001 Audi S3 for 6850e
mid range/learner - my sisters 2005 VW Polo for 4000e (needed about 500e put into it, tyres, tax etc)

do you mind me asking why your interested in "low emissions"? buying at your price range will not get you an 08 car so your motor tax is still cc based irrelevent of the CO2 emissions....

The country is gone diesel mad. Small, cheap ecoboxes are also in demand. Quickest sellers of those are ones under the €7k mark as people can borrow from credit unions as opposed to be turned down for finance by banks.

Anything that is expensive to run and/or unrealistically priced is not shifting. Also contrary to popular belief by Joe Public there is very little value at auctions, just inexperienced first time goers bidding against each other and driving the price up.

    Thanks folks,
What would you suggest buying around the 4000-5000 bracket might be able to stretch to 6 depending on the vehicle.
No kids and looking for nothing fancy that is fairly economical and looks ok,would be looking at a 04-05.

Just curious.. why would it be safer to buy privately?

I've always been of the opinion that you pay a bit more at the dealer for peace of mind (although not always the case with dealers) and 6 - 12 month warranty.

Am not disagreeing.. am just wondering the reasoning.

You asked about buying form auctions or private. Avoid auctions unless you know what you are doing.

Oh no.. I wouldn't go near auctions, but I always thought dealers were a safer bet (although you'll pay more than from private sellers obviously).

yeah dealers will give you a warrenty and are supposed to be up front about anything wrong with the car. Private sale and it buyer beware and must ask all the questions.

That said private will save you a lot depending on the car...
