hi everyone! want to buy a used A6 diesel, 05 or 06. I really wanted to keep milage to 50k max but my budget doesnt allow for it and I may need to buy one with up to 80k mls on the clock. i only do about 10k a year.

any advise on how many miles is the max before you are more likely to have troubles?

    thanks!

Put the budget aside. I cant see you getting one of that mileage in that year. Your are safe enough up to 80-90k miles but then you will have possible injector failure and Dmf failure too. All very expensive items to replace op.

10k miles is not diesel mileage. Between DMF and DPF issues on modern diesels it could end up costing you alot more in maintenance than you will ever save on fuel.

Also I'd be very suspicious of a 5 or 6 year old diesel car like an A6 with only 50k miles on the clock.

I'm driving a 03 Passat with 130k on the clock and the only serious problem was the clutch going and that was mainly down to the way it was drove. 100k on a car like that wouldn't put me off as long as it had been serviced and had the required work done.

The newer 2.0 litre TDi in the A6 is not as reliable as the old 1.9 TDi in the Passat. Only doing 10k miles a year means lots of short trips which will kill the DPF fitted to the 2.0 litre TDi.

I would be happy to own any Audi with less than 100k on it but after that I would give it a wide birth. Seems like too much stuff goes wrong after that, nothing abnormal but when Audi stuff needs replacing it tends to be expensive. Same goes for Bimmers of that age in fairness - that's why I tend to stick to the older stuff. Older Bimmers tend to be less hassle and cheap enough to fix, older Audis are another story however!

My idea of high mileage is many miles with no service history to back them. I would much rather buy a well maintained car with over 100k rather than a typical Irish one with average mileage and just the bare minimum done.

70k is too much in these, the oil pump can start giving up from that stage.

The 1.9 TDI is the last ever engine that VW/Audi bothered to build properly, most of the more modern stuff is absolute crap, though apparently the new CR diesels are not causing any problems.... well not just yet anyway(though considering they're not even three years old I suppose even for VAG that's a bit early to be causing havoc).

The 2.7 and 3.0 TDIs are much more reliable than the 2.0 TDI but I am aware of the Irish mentality towards buying anything other than the worst version of any given car.....

What year did the new Diesel CR 2.0TDI come in? 2008?

Post march 2008, I have one, whatever about the rest of the car.... the engine never gave trouble.

Performance wise there doesn't seem to be much between the 2 and the 3. (Even though he does start the 2L a fraction earlier )

In the A6 the CR engines did not appear until mid 2009 with the facelifted model.

No bother lad. To be fair the poster asking the question wasn't too specific about which model they were asking about.
