Probably a memory leak in some program running in the background.

I had a similar problem with my PC recently - it turned out to be a dying graphics card was causing the nVidia drivers to freak out and seize up.

In a nutshell it could be one of a hundred things. What OS are you running? Is it a new PC or an old one? How much bloatware / crapware is installed on it? Have you tried restoring from a system backup? Are you running a server on your machine (I'm guessing you are or you wouldn't have it running all day) if so what server?

If you don't need your PC on all the time, set your power settings so that it goes to sleep after a while. It might solve your issue, and even if it doesn't you'll save a lot of electricity.

mightnt be a virus but might be a trojan or malware...check these out.
Install them...run them and then uninstall them (as they sometimes can slow pc down) first one should be enough. They are all free and very good.

    malwarebytes
    spybot search and destroy
    ccleaner
