Which has been on sale over 3 years and isn't on the list?

It's only a facelift for 2011 and a few new engines. Hardly an all new car.

Saw a Juke at the weekend and was actually impressed by it.

    Atari Jag FTW

can you edit the list to ad the octavia please

    This is completely random.
Surely this needs the input from people that have put all vehicles through a certain test criteria?

There are some cars what aren't on this list that I'd like there but hey I don't choose it, but the 370z should get it for releasing a sports car in a time of recession, No idea what it's like to drive, I won't have it until January.

The current model Octavia has been onsale since 2004, all it got was a facelift last year. An almost 7 year old design is hardly going to qualify for next year's Car of the Year.

Can we have one thread without people bleating on about the Octavia?

BMW 5 series wins, anything else is just madness.

BMW replace one 3 box saloon with another 3 box saloon. Yawn.

The Irish population have a mental block against Volvos.

It's strange to see the SAAB 9-5 up there though.

I voted Kia Venga because it's a bigger protest vote than Atari Jaguar.

What no Alfa Romeo Guiletta???? new model should be included imo, best diesels, and the new TBi is a gem...

    Original longer list is here:
The cars that qualify for entry for the Continental Irish Car of the Year 2011 competition have been announced by the Irish Motoring Writers Association (IMWA). The winning car will be revealed at a ceremony in the Convention Centre Dublin, Spencer Dock, on Thursday 25 November.

Paddy Murphy of Continental Tyres Ireland and Michael Moroney, Chairman of the Irish Motoring Writers Association, with model Aoife Cogan at the launch of the Continental Irish Car of the Year competition. Thirty nine vehicles are in the running for the award, which will be presented at a ceremony at the Convention Centre Dublin, Spencer Dock, on Thursday 25 November.

    Alfa Romeo Giulietta
    Audi A1
    Audi A5 Sportback
    Audi A8
    BMW 5 Series
    BMW X1
    Citroen C3
    Citroen C3 Picasso
    Citroen DS3
    Fiat Doblo Passenger
    Fiat Punto Evo
    Ford C-Max
    Honda Insight
    Hyundai ix20
    Hyundai ix35
    Jaguar XJ
    Kia Venga
    Kia Sorento
    Kia Sportage
    Mercedes Benz SLS
    Mini Countryman
    Mitsubishi ASX
    Mitsubishi iMIEV
    Nissan Pixo
    Nissan Juke
    Nissan 370Z
    Opel Astra
    Opel Meriva
    Peugeot RCZ
    Peugeot 5008
    Renault Fluence
    Saab 9-5
    Seat Exeo
    Skoda Yeti
    Subaru Legacy
    Suzuki Swift
    Toyota Prius
    Toyota Verso
    Volvo S60

Speaking at the announcement of the contenders for the prestigious 2011 award, Michael Moroney, Chairman of the IMWA, said, "For my colleagues and myself, the easy job is drawing up the full list of cars that are eligible for the award. Now, on behalf of Irish motorists, we must select a deserving winner from this list of worthy cars. Our final choices are based on a vehicle's particular suitability to Irish motorists and the conditions of the Irish market."

"Compared to last year, the motor industry in Ireland has seen something of an upturn this year – thanks in the main to the scrappage scheme," commented Paddy Murphy of Continental Tyres Ireland, Irish Car of the Year sponsor.

"And any Irish motorist looking to buy a new car for 2011 would be well advised to pay attention to the IMWA's recommendations as they whittle the list of entries down to one winning model."

The ten short-listed vehicles will be announced in early November. The Continental Irish Car of the Year and Van of the Year awards are adjudicated by the Irish Motoring Writers Association. Last year the Continental Irish Car of the Year title went to the Peugeot 3008, while the van accolade was won by the Ford Transit Connect.

Sympathy vote for Saab - similar to why Peugeot won it last year. The IMWA dont have a lot of credibility with their award amongst the industry.

Its good to see we still have some common sense as a Nation :)

I'd call it ignorance to be honest. No recognition of a good car unless the brand is in vogue (Audi, BMW etc).

Wheres the "I think Ill stick with my 99 Honda thank you very much" option? :pac:

The 370Z aside its a seriously uninspiring list of cars.

I suppose it was the only cheap Japanese car on the list - as always the most important criterium for Irish judges

This is the IMWA after all - nearly all are part time journalists and some dont even have their reviews published. 27 listed and nearly all of them clueless.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,011 ✭✭✭Bodhan

The Juke is a good car, I'm not sure it's car of the year. I had one last week and while it handles well enough the 1.6 engine is a bit thirsty and sluggish.
It is coming out in a 1.5dci and that should be good, the Juke is a fashion statement. BTW I was at the awards but I'm not a member so don't blame me for the Juke winning.

agree. it is not a bad car, but it makes me wonder did some of the people in the jury never got the chance to drive one...
