Irish Army records

In pursuing a lead on my great-grandfather, I wrote to the military archives in Cathal Brugha Barracks a while back.

I got a response today - no news on him but letting me know they are digitising all the service records, so staff can more easily access them. So it sounds like there's no public access but even a database for their internal use will be of great expediency.

And with typical military precision, they said it was starting this week and would be completed next month. They will get back to me after that, along with everyone else who has requested said information.

Has the process gotten any quicker?

Also ive been told that my G-grandfather was a carpenter in the Army about 1946. Is there a way i can get his record with this info?

    Cheers

I don't know how relevant this is but there is (7 years ago anyhow) a HR unit within the dept of defence who specialise on grades of staff such as carpenters (industrial and craft grades). If no one else can help they might be able give you some direction on how to find out.

I have no other knowledge of finding records with them but thought this might help.

Within a month or two of that post in 2010, they sent me a full copy of his records in the post. Extremely helpful.

I'm sure it would take far less time now, as everything is digitised. Gather up the proof of your descent (I had to send this) and drop them an email: they'll tell you quick enough what you need to know and if there is to be a delay.

Oh, right I'm not quite sure, but I expect he will need to apply (or at least sign the letter you send), with his birth cert proving he's looking for the record of his father, and potentially his father's death cert.

I wonder if the records will go back to the post-Truce Free State Army? Now THAT will be interesting to know about, for sure.
