Scrappage - Bending the rules?

My Dad has decided to change before year is out and is considering using my brother's old run around as a scrappage trade in.

The benefit to him is nil but it would get my brother up from a '97 to a '07 run around for very little money.

I'm assuming that my brother would have to be the purchaser and would have to then "sell" the car on to my Dad and at the same time my Dad would be "selling" the '07 to him.

Can anyone in the trade advise if this is being done or indeed not possible to do?

Also is anyone aware of any possible pitfalls; insurance implications for example?

Perhaps this has been done before but I searched the first 5 or so pages of results after a "scrappage" search with nil relevant info coming back

Should be fine as long as brother meets the criteria for the scrappage scheme. THe brother would have to go about the purchase and pass the car to your father. There would be then an extra owner on the car but given all the nearly new stuff that came from uk in the last year or so, it will be pretty normal for newish cars to have had 2 owners in the first few months.
The other side of this is that your father will be buying a 10 reg very late in the year now. It is quite possible that he could buy a slightly used 10 reg next year even cheaper than the scrappage deal now. If he did that, he would be making the saving directly and not passing on the benefit to brother.

Thanks for that mickdw. Your points are understood but largely irrelevant in my Dad's circumstances to be honest. In all probability this will be his last car; he's 77yrs. The motivation for changing is that he has grown to hate the current motor and doesn't want to face another winter in it.

Also the brother who benefits is the closest family member to the folks, geographically speaking, so does an awful lot of the donkey work that they need done for them as they grow older. Part of the reason for doing the deal the way they're thinking is as a sort of acknowledgement to him.

    Should work out fine then.

am pretty much doing the same thing with my folks.

Was going to change ownership before buying, but the scrappage rules , state you must own the car for a year (or 18 months )

I'm wondering , will the new car warranty be void, if ownership changes during the warranty period ???

Warranty is on the car regardless of owners usually. What car is it?

No rule bending involved, what your folks are planning is all above board and legal.
