Hey all, just have a few questions about dropping out and fees next year..

Am in first year media studies.. really not liking the course, its just not for me.. and theres a few others reasons aswell. Plan atm is to go back and do leaving cert biology and do nursing next year...
Long winded but have regretted not doing biology since day 1 fifth year.. Not 100% sure yet about dropping out but i'm thinking thats what I will do.

Anyway, just wondering, if i drop out, does anyone know if i have to pay full fees next year?
I read somewhere on here that if i drop out by Nov.30th i dont have to pay tutition fees, just the reg.fee... and that if i go by Jan.31st I have to pay half of the tutition fees plus reg.fee! However this was an old thread so i cant be sure!

Any information or advice would be great..
    Thanks guys!

Go and have a chat with the people in the Academic Advisory Office (it's in the Arts Block - go down the corridor next to Bewleys, and it's the office with loads of chairs outside it). They'll tell you exactly how to drop out, and have a chat with you about the fees and stuff.

I think what you're saying about the fees is right, but not 100% sure. Also, if you get the grant, you will only get the 2 instalments you haven't picked up yet.

If you think dropping out is the right thing for you to do, do it. You don't want to end up regretting it later on (I speak from experience :o). I hope you get in to the nursing course you want :) Have fun with Biology too, I loved it when I did it for the LC :D

Thanks so much for that Might pop down later today..

Seriously appreciate the advice and information, I'm kind of clueless about the whole thing. All I know is that I'm not happy here or in the course...
Hopefully if i go soon i wont have to pay fees.. fingers crossed!

Unfortunately I'm 99% sure you only don't have to pay the fees if you drop out before October 31st, not November 31st. You're still eligible for half fees though.

I did the same thing as you plan to do 3 years ago and it's the best decision I've ever made, seriously. People told me to stick it out (I was doing comp science and Biotech) but I knew that if I didn't like it after a month I wasn't going to like it after 4 years.

Go talk to the academic advisory people, they'll be more than happy to help you. The actual process of de-registering and dropping out is rather painless too. Try keep your student card (if they ask for it, just tell them you haven't got it handy) so you can get student discount during this year :pac:

Best of luck with the year so, OP. Hope your new course goes better for you :)

Hehe, imagine you as a computer scientist. No wait, I can't :P

    Good luck OP!

If its not for you, go. I dropped out two years into a different degree some time ago and couldn't be happier!

I started a degree in DCU and hated it. I figured that if this is what the college version is like, how bad will the real world version be!

I'm in Multimedia and plan on dropping out too because I don't like it at all. I plan to do night courses instead because I will actually learn the stuff I've signed up for. This thread really helped me because I had no idea where to go in Maynooth, well I knew it was in the arts block but had no idea where in the arts block. Plan on leaving next week.

Best of luck! Remember to de-register officially before Christmas just in case, so you get half of your fees back :)
